.ws domains. "Financial Freedom"?

I've been really loving the .WS domains lately. I stood of for them and everything, and was going to buy some and actually replace some of my .coms with them, But i just found out something that I DO NOT like.

All unregistered .ws domains lead to some crappy page that talks about "Financial Freedom". You can test it yourself. Type any random domain.ws that you think will most likely be unregistered into your address bar and click enter. you'll see it.

This kinda makes me not want to buy anymore of these. It just doesn't seem right or attractive, or anything really. There is no notice at all on the site that the domain is unregistered or anything like that.

Are there any other TLD's or anything that do this type of thing? I really like the "Server not found" error page better.

Now i am starting to realize why alot of people do not like these.

I really do feel kinda foolish for getting all excited over nothing.

That's because Global Domains International are a MLM company that is based on reselling the .ws domain. Basically they give you a .ws domain and very basic web hosting (only allowed a 10 page site and very little bandwidth per month). For this they charge $10 per month ($5 of which is send down the levels) for a domain that you can register for $7.99 per year at Dynadot and hosting that is not worth a cracker.

Like most MLM things you are paying for the opportunity to sign up others rather than the real value of the product. That's just my opinion anyway.

Therefore that's why unregistered .ws domains come up with the GDI promotion pages, they have a deal with the registry (Western Samoan Government).

.ws runs a DNS wildcard like .cm...

It might not be that bad, at least they are trying to sell more .ws domains which will just increase demand in future if more are sold.

They have preyed on a lot of late night TV watchers with hype that just hasn't lived up for most other than the two shifty looking fellows in front of the expensive cars.

eBay, the WB, Thrifty Nickel - all the usual routes for MLM style outfits.

.ws is a bust not just because of the wildcard parking - but because of the general lack of marketing and the problem of a small local market.

Avoid....

Buy some nice .ws keywords cheap, and if you develop them properly, the search engines will find them.

But as far as those infomercial guys (everybody sing with me):

SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM
SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM
SCAMMITY SCAM, SCAMMITY SCAM ....

...And because you cannot transfer .WS domains between Registrars.

I don't see how this is trying to sell more .ws domains. If they wanted to do that then they'd have some page about .ws domains show up, and info about it and how to get one, instead they have some crap on there that reminds me of some sort of pyramid scheme (not saying thats what it is)

I just don't trust this sort of thing. Really seems too fish to me. Maybe i'll check out their little tour thing.

Uh, the classic "Spam" song by Monty Python? (Am I showing my age again?)

I shied away from .ws for a while myself, but not due to a wildcard page for unregistered names. I'd rather see that than porn or viagra. I just can't pass up some of the great keywords I've gotten lately in .ws.

Yeah I hope they change that in the future, I would probably go with Godaddy for about $12 last time I checked as opposed to the register that is selling them at around $8 because you want to be able to push them easily when selling in future, if you do want to sell that is!

Many premium domains are still available (dog.ws, cat.ws, tax.ws, mix.ws, db.ws ), but price is too high for .ws extension. $1000-$2000 for 2 years.
And they are available for registration only at the registry, which is not so good by me.
