Would you use a good ".net" name without owning its ".com" instance?

I've found a great ".net" name for a site that I own. However, the ".com" is owned and parked by someone else.

I mean usually when people hear about a web site name, they naturally assume it's ".com", which, in my case, will just grant traffic for the owner of the ".com" domain.

Would this concern you?

your views are much appreciated :)

I own a .net that does very well, the guy whose selling the .com minimum asking price on sedo is $3,500.

I don't think I lose much traffic since the .com isn't developed and much of my traffic comes from google, yahoo etc...

Thank you so much for your responses everyone.

It's not a business. It's actually a web development blog. I'm not making any money off it, but I still care about the traffic of course.

I find it a hard decision as I spend so much time to come up with a name as good as the one I have right now.

I've contacted the owner of the ".com" and i'm waiting for the response now. If he doesn't respond or refuses to sell it, I think I'll just go with the .net.

I think that is sensible and just about right...................

I have several .nets that do well.

The primary consideration is whether or not this is going to be your only source of income? If so, try to find a .com. If not, then it does not matter as much. I own several .net web sites, and yeah some traffic might bleed off to the .com, but the.coms are undeveloped, so people will supposedly keep looking for me, if they have been to the sites before.

Plus, on my developed sites, I always put something like this near the top:

NEVER get lost, add us to your FAVORITES!

Once you are on their favorites, you are golden anyways.

Agreed. Traffic may bleed off to the .com. But, according to my case, at least if your site is a well developed then the visitor will remember your site and also search engines will love your site

If it's a minisite or something small, then yes.

If you plan to develop something big, then I wouldn't recommend.

hi,

its important, are you expecting type-ins ?

Contra -> that most people (most newbies) have .com in mind

But there are some other examples:
- in some countries is .NET prefered more then .COM

- if site is good, then that doesn't matter,
example there is geizhals.de and geizhals.at --> but i always go to .at because they have more functions

- in German TV there are advertisments running for PartyPoker.NET
(i think they have .COM but their branding is .NET)

- for me, .NET sounds better (i know its just me :)
because -> .COM = Commercial , <- they want to sell me something

Yes, and .NET = Network is more suitable for a community or forum related website.

Best to have the .com if you're going to make a site, but .net will work too. If the .com can be had for a price that's worth it to you, I'd get it.

I am in current negotiations with a Intellectual Property Attorney who is trying to buy one of my .com's which is a bankof+(city abbreviation).com and they went out and bought the .net.

Now I did not inflate the price but this is a rather large city and I have owned this name for many many years and I thought $5,000 was a pretty reasonable offer for a city that has close to a million people. They only wanted to pay $1000 for the name.

I looked at the "who is" on the recently bought .net and it is in a companies names that is a billion dollar bankingcompany and the admins for the name is the intellectual property attorney who is making the offer on my domain.

When I returned the email for my offer I DID know know they acquired the .net and they have allready set up the hosting on it. I hope they do not accept my offer which runs out in a few days (I put a time limit on it) and i will be jacking up the price when they come back for the name. And i will welcome all the type in traffic as well.

I have a lot of .com's where others have built and devoloped the .net's. Some of these .com's make over $100 per month in PPC and the owners never asked to by the .com's and I could care less if they do... I just hope they get bigger.

But what really makes your .com get traffic when somebody else developes the .net is "RE-Occuring TRAFFIC". If the .net is just a site that people will search and find in the search engines and never return, then don't expect a lot of traffic / ppc on your .com. However if it is a site like a bank where people are going back to check their account then you can expect the traffic.
