Would You Develop a .Net?

Just wondering because I am possibly going to be launching a large site on a generic .net domain. Fortunately the .com isn't used, however, do you think it could be affected badly even if I brand it as a "Network"?

I was just thinking about Oversee.net.

Can you imagine if Lawrence Ng didn't develop Oversee.net

So, you would never develop sex.net? Or computers.net? or Business.net? Quality .net domains hold intrinsic value, it's just that the cost of doing business is slightly higher if there is a developed .com ahead of you. Nevertheless, a good keyword dot net can make a ton of money for you.

You're right, I would never develop sex.net or computers.net unless I have the .com. Why? Most of our work is aimed at people outside cyberspace where .com is king. A good example would be the pizza.com sale. It was all over the media and internet. Nobody seems to care about the pizza.net auction that just ended.

I am sure some .net's hold great value, and I know they can make a ton of money. I just wouldn't put loads of time, money and effort into developing a .net when the .com is pulling most of the traffic and the top search engine ranks.

But, the cost of trying to make someone remember to go to myfunkybusiness dot com is intrinsically higher than trying to get someone to remember business dot net, IMO.

There is always the great bookmark button, but I get your point. We all know that no sane person would register myfunkybusiness dot com if business.net was available. So comparing myfunkybusiness dot com to business.net is somewhat off balance. Any website with a decent .com has potential if you develop it, market it well and pull the right strings. It's all about what is available today and what you can make out of it. If you're into building networks or developing computer/web/tech related sites, I am sure .net is a great alternative.

If you are blessed with a billion dollars to buy and develop business dot com, hey, what are you talking to us for, hehe, the surf's up!!! :bingo:

I don't have billions of dollars. I'm hanging out here because I love NP and I love the community. I'm however not here to sell our domains, lets just leave it at that :)

I guess this always needs to be broken up into two distinct camps: Do you have the capital to waste buying the .com, or are you going to spend that money on developing the .net....

If you want to call "buying the .com" a waste of money, go ahead. All I can say is that if you invest your money properly in a .com, develop the domain and put some time into marketing the "product", the initial investment will bring you a great deal of money. I'm not saying a .net can't do the same, it's about your target audience.

If a great generic .net is available, go ahead and grab it, it's a winner either way. For our purpose, product branding, the .com holds more value to us than a .net. That's why we wouldn't register a .net and develop it if the .com wasn't available. We like to own the .com and redirect all other domains to the .com.

I'd rather develop a .net to a .com

I would have no problem developing a .net under a few situations.

1.) Super Premium Domain Name
2.) The .com is a popular site that gets traffic.
3.) It is an appropriate name. Some names make no sense as .net

A lot of good advice is in first part of this thread already which is all I have read but I've re branded a .net to a similar .com and it finally felt good to have full control. With a premium .net then it would be worth giving it a go I'm sure.

I would develop a .net but be prepared to lose some traffic to the .com
