Would You Develop a .Net?

Just wondering because I am possibly going to be launching a large site on a generic .net domain. Fortunately the .com isn't used, however, do you think it could be affected badly even if I brand it as a "Network"?

It would be fine to develop it and brand it as "network" ... as long as you have (own) and redirect or similarly develop the .COM version, as well! :gl: :talk: :imho:

Best of Luck.

I would only considering development if the domain was super premium. Other then that, I would seek on for the .com

I have my sales website on a net. I found that even I was saying "com" and others were also. I bought a similar name in .com, redirected it to my net, and branded that. Then last year the com dropped and I got it. Now I have three names instead of one, but I have it covered.

I also have a minor site on an info, probably gets as much traffic from the keywords as it loses from people trying to find it on the com - but I do not advertise it at all, so most traffic is from Google, etc.

The issue is that it could be perfectly branded as the "XXX network". It most definitely is super premium; so much in fact that the .com is completely out of reach (I would value it at high $xxx, xxx - $x,xxx, xxx). Therefore I have the choice of devloping it or registering some random Web2.0-style LLLLL.com and doing it on there. Rep added to all who replied.

I would do it.The dot com isnt being used so who cares if they get some of your traffic, they are not competition.I would be sure to brand the .net part of the name with it strongly however, make sure you emphasise the net.Unless ofcourse you could get a good brandable .com and you feel like it would work just as well, if not better, then probally I would go with that and do something else, like sale that good net you have to use the money for your business.Just my thoughts, kinda hard really with out knowing the name itself and type of business and all,but GL to you.

NO, unless the .net is premium like car.net, freegames.net

Go for .asia if you can't get the .com ;) .asia and .com are the same thing right :red:

Or pick up a web 2.0, 5 letter.com LLLLL.com like you were talking about as your other choice from my current ebay auctions, check my signature, I should have one on auction right now to meet your "web 2.0" criteria

If it is a brand name I would have developed it.

I've developed several .net domains successfully, regardless of their topic.

It is not realistic to cut yourself out of a primary niche just because someone else owns the .com and won't sell it to you for less than 100K.

Heck, one of my most successful sites is a .us.

Go for it, IMO.

It is of roughly the same quality. It is similar to Questions.net.

I think I will develop it; it will help with the name's value anyway.

I would never develop a .net if I wouldn't have the .com as well.

For our brands we only develop the .com and 301 redirect all the other domain names like net/org/info/biz/us/tv and other (cc)TLD's to that developed .com. That way we prevent imitators and wannabes :)

So, you would never develop sex.net? Or computers.net? or Business.net? Quality .net domains hold intrinsic value, it's just that the cost of doing business is slightly higher if there is a developed .com ahead of you. Nevertheless, a good keyword dot net can make a ton of money for you.

But, the cost of trying to make someone remember to go to myfunkybusiness dot com is intrinsically higher than trying to get someone to remember business dot net, IMO.

If you are blessed with a billion dollars to buy and develop business dot com, hey, what are you talking to us for, hehe, the surf's up!!! :bingo:

I guess this always needs to be broken up into two distinct camps: Do you have the capital to waste buying the .com, or are you going to spend that money on developing the .net....

Excellent post; shame I repped you earlier because now I can't rep you for this! So it looks like I will develop the .net and, if it is fairly successful, I will approach the owner of the .com.

I agree, at the end of the day if you provide good info/content they will come back to you, regardless if they first try the .com by mistake.

I would definitely make a point of having a Bookmark this site link in a very prominent position on each page and as mentioned make an issue of the fact its a .net

JMO - good luck

PS - I think sooo many people overestimate the amount of type ins most domains get.

if the content is good people will come, and learn to remember it.

Exactly plus I am "type-in lazy" and never type-in anything instead I google and with development you will be at the top of search not the undeveloped .com.

good luck and tell us the name when you are ready to launch,

if you are starting now with .net
better buy .com may be it will be cheaper to get now
if your .net gets popularity then .com also goes some higher rate for you :)

I agree . .nets need love too. If the .com is undeveloped and you put some good content up, people will find you through the SEs . See more developed .nets in Asia .

I wouldn't...no way... no matter how great the name is. Since you will likely loose the traffic to a .COM version.
