Hi everyone,

So I have a domain that I quite like .com.
.net/.org/ etc.. are available for the same domain name, would you buy these? and would it make any difference in terms of traffic towards the main site .com?

Please advise,

Thanks!!

I used to do some of that as "brand protection" but no longer feel it is worth it. The exception would be in a case where there is a strong country TLD like Germany.

It depends. Are you developing it and do you plan to go big? Generally in this case taking .net and .org should do. Unless you plan to go for country specific marketing and others you shouldn't need the cctlds.

If you have the .COM, in all likelihood you're all set! :yell: :imho:

Lie said above it is all a matter of scale, if you are the copyright/trademark holder it might be a good idea to get multiple TLDs but it isn't really necessary. Think of it more like a ploy by registrars to frighten people into spending more money than they really need to.

Only buy the .net and .org if you are afraid that someone might come along and steal your customers who are looking for you specifically but this doesn't generally happen for a long time until your name is universally known.

It may be a good idea to buy your country extension though, I know for England here .co.uk is a very strong one with over 70% of people recognizing it and typing it in before they go for the .com.

The trouble with buying every extension is that you will probably need to translate and it will get very, very expensive with some registrars charging up to and beyond $250 for some reason.

that's right. if you gonna start a huge website, it is worth to buy other TLDs. it's worth only if you got a brand Name.

unless, it is not a matter..

agree with all of the above , depends really on your plans for the name ,

If you spend lots of money to set up a company in that name or to register trademarks or to develop a big project, then not getting the other main extensions sounds silly to me. Here is a real life example of mine:

I started this project a few days ago: namecatch.com

I bought these domains just to protect the brand:
name-catch.com
namecatch.net
name-catch.net
namecatch.org

I believe the dot net version is a must. A competitor website on the dot net domain can be more popular than your website on the com extension. Especially for websites related to domain business or websites that are mainly a forum, you must have the .net version. If I couldn't get the .net version for a forum website I would change my website's name.

Since domains are so cheap now days, I would at least register both the .com and .net
