    Assumption: most if not all browsers address bar by default displays URLs in lower case and sans-serif font.

    In lower case and sans-serif font, the narrowest characters are
    1. i, l;
    2. f, j, t, 1;
    3. followed by the rest.
    Combinations of only i and l in x.xx would be first candidates, but neither Israel (.il) nor Lichtenstein (.li) seem to offer one-character domain names.
    Next narrowest country codes are combinations of i or l with f, j, or t. I have found four: fi, it, lt, tl.
    Out these, fi, it, and lt do not offer one-character domain domains.

    .tl seems to be the narrowest TLD that offers one-character domain names.

    I submit that that the world's shortest domain names are i.tl and l.tl.

    Let me know your thoughts...

    I really like l.tl especially as it phonetically sounds like little (if you forget the dot), which was the whole point of your search.

    l.tl is now a URL shortener service, currently in alpha.

    Please feel free to use it. The accounts and the shortened URLS will be persisted. You don't need to, but if you become a member you can assign aliases (4 to 8 characters) to your short urls. Since those are first come first serve, they have value. Here is an example l.tl/dnhacks

    It depends also a little bit what font one will choose.
    Monospace fonts will make no difference. w.mw would be the same short as i.ii :

    w.mw
    i.ii

    While with typical fonts the difference is very big:

    w.mw
    i.ii
