we can see 3 nice things in your post...

1) it took 2 years and a half to reach 100 names (considering no one is missing);
2) registrations were made by companies mainly;
3) generic words werent so good (thats very very strange)

'85, jesus that's some time back, domain-wise.

i thought registrations happened/started in the mid 90s.
the glory days of domaining was 94-2000...

after 2000, it has become very mainstream and popularized.

I also thought that domain names came out in 1993. I didn't think it was way back in 1986.

I believe mit.edu, berkeley.edu, etc.were ahead of most the names here.

Sex.com was regged in 1994 I believe.

btw, go to Tit.com...the owner has an interesting story about how he regged the name (he wanted to reg his last name, which begins with Tit. It'd been regged, so he regged Tit.com instead. Weird...a last name was regged, but a super valuable name like Tit.com wasn't)

btw, was UB.com regged just randomly, or was it regged as initials for University of Buffalo? I ask this because I go to Univ. of Buffalo...

But back when he registered the domain it was not valuable.

I thought I would bump this thread with additional information :tu:

I wanted to dig into the case of enea.se and asked the Swedish registry. Their reply below.

Hi Kate,

We are glad that you asked the question, because it forced us to make
some digging into our Internet history!

To start with, the name enea was probably expressed like:

!mcvax!enea!ber

Which was the name registered byt he time. This was an effect of the
fact that Bjorn Eriksen (ber) was appointed to allocate IP addresses
or maybe an effect that they actually asked for an IP address for
Enea, and got the name as a result.

MCVAX had IP early and we wrote *.se through UUCP, we consider it to
be seismo!mcvax!ena!ttds to reach the Swedish Royal Institute of
Technology (KTH).

We had MX records for .SE before we got name servers that could
understand IP (which was implemented as 56 K sattelite connection to
JVNC)....

So, in short, enea was registered, but not as a domain since the
domain name system wasn't invented yet.

Kind regards

ร„mne: status of enea.se

Hello,

I would like to receive clarification on domain name enea.se please.
According to whois the name was created on 1983-04-07, so it could be
the oldest domain name known.
But the .se TLD was only added to the root on 04-September-1986
according to IANA.

Can you explain the discrepancy ?

Kind regards,
Kate

But there is more ;)
As someone pointed out in another thread there is a .nl domain which shows a creation date of 1980. I guess it was not registered as a fully-fledged domain back then.

That's amazing, anybody know what a domain name registration was worth in 1985?
I sure paid a lot for my first dot coms.
