No dispute here, if you use WordPress in your domain, you'll lose it. Simple as. It's like having ebay in your name.

The only reason I can think of legitimately having the wordpress trademark in a domain is if the name is Swordpress :hehe:

In blogging terms, it's slightly upsetting; but in terms of domaining, you only have yourself to blame if you register a trademarked domain! :(

If they don't defend their trademark, the will lose it.

I just think its cool that they are willing to allow some uses in the domain if they approve of it. This helps to strengthen the community and in providing themes and plugins. I use Wordpress Multiuser for my blog community site, and from my experiences, its a great community (the WP development and site owner community), where everyone is willing to help each other, including the devs... They have several links on their site to other sites using wordpress in the domain, who usually offer mods and themes for free and obviously have permission to use the name.

They definitely have every right to defend their mark and I'm not sure why anyone would think different.

It's because:

1. Some know little to nothing about the issues involved.

2. Some get pretty emotional about it.

I know WordPress is doing the right thing in protecting their trademark rights.
What I considered a shame is how they called one of the parties in question
doing "scammy snakeoil business".

It's easy to come to that conclusion without knowing further the other side.
Then again, you don't have to know the other side, much more care.

There are a lot of websites using "myspace" in their domain name and I don't see myspace.com going after them.
The wordpress folks need to chill on this one.

Actually Myspace has gone after a lot of "myspace" infringing domains...

You can also have a domain name with a trademark if it is against them, such as paypalsucks.com or anything that.
