If I syndicate an article on an article submission site, should I refrain from using it on my own website as well? Is that duplicate content, or am I protected against that because only the page the article is on gets penalized, not my entire site?

If you're considering article submission you shouldn't include that same article on your site. Just write the article about your site or a certain niche that your site caters to. Then use the footer of the article to enter the URL to your site. You can see an example here... Example .
