Why do some Australian companies not use or even register a .com?

I have seen more than a few Australian companies that don't have a .com extension registered of their .au domain (and the .com is available). Have others seen this? It seems strange.

If there aren't any trademark issues, is it worth purchasing some of the .com extensions?

.com.au is the cctld for Australia. Why would they need the .com? If you are registering the .com in order to sell it to the .com.au, then forget it. If they want it they would already have registered the .com

Outside the US, many country code extensions are so popular that end users often don't bother with the .com. In Europe that is common.

Thanks guys. That is what I figured, but I didn't know that they were so popular that a company wouldn't even purchase the .com, especially if they are doing business internationally...

Personally, if "I" was an Australian company doing business internationally, by which I mean, in the US specifically, then I'd want the .com of my .com.au. But then that's just me :)

Especially, since a favorable trade agreement between the US & Australia seems forthcoming...

Google gives preferences to the ccTLD, so many "local" companies dont bother with .com.

Except in your case Corey, where every domain in your signature is a .com, not .com.au :)
