I have seen some people discuss the age of a domain, like oh its 4 years old so its worth $x,xxx instead of just $xxx.. I am wondering why this is, though.

There is some controversy about this subject.
Some say that Google prefers old domain names and gives them some bonus.
Some say it doesn't matter how old a domain is.
Nobody really can guaranty that an old domain name will have advantages.
But i can tell you from my own experience that for instance domain names with creation dates older than 10 years (and indexed in Google, not banned or something) gave me some advantages while making some minisites with them. They ranked much faster. Thats also what many SEOs say based on their experience. But there is no guaranty.

Content is more important than age, imho.

A domain register for more than 5/10 yrs from this date back and forth are place into a auto-consideration. Why? Well a spammer would not register a domain for 10 years, neither someone that was to just try an idea. Now serious business will register for more than 10 years. So this gives a tag, that help you not rank, but more to remove the sandbox. I believe 1 year registration is a sandbox of 3 months, 5 years is 6 weeks and 10 years is 2 weeks.

Now that been said do not mix sandbox with indexing, there 2 different things.
