Some registrars will hold the "pending delete" domain names and put them to their own auction platform
Is this still going on?
Now that would be fun to watch. Why does this thread remind me of the Chicken Little story about him screaming "the sky is falling"? Drops stopping would change domaining for a lot of people.
Untrue to my knowledge.
Verisign makes their money off early redemption, but not 45 days after. They just release it publicly.
That's not possible. Verisign renews all expired com's for 45 days for free. During that time the registrar can either pay the money or auto renewal will be reverted back. The domains are not under the control of the registrar when they reach pending delete which is about 85 days after expiry.
The only way for the registrars to keep the domains would be to pay the renewal fee themselves, but then the domain wouldn't reach pending delete either because it would be renewed. Tucows is known for renewing good customer domains and keeping to themselves. But this is only a small percentage of the expired tucows domains.
I have seen some domains put on auctions by Dynadot when they were in redemption periods.
I remember one of those domains' old registrars was Tucows. I later came across an article saying that GoDaddy has established a business deal/relationship with Tucows that allows GoDaddy to "catch" Tucows' domains before they are actually dropped.
I suppose if some Tucows' expiring domains are backordered at GoDaddy, GD will renew them before they drop, and then put them on auction.
