Glad I'm not the only one...I was after a few domains today but they never dropped! Either we are both crazy or something odd is going on.

Yeah, I am wondering the same thing. None of the .COM I backordered today have dropped.

The same happened to me! I was asking other people about this, I knew I didn't made any mistake...
Not just .com, .net didn't expired as well...

I feel better knowing I am not crazy then. I was starting to think I picked the wrong drop date. This is a first timer for me...

Werty, I was thinking the same, spent some time double checking if I was doing anything wrong... this is really strange, hope nothing fishy is being prepared... hopefully it was just a glitch... a big glitch...

Any chance for the drop still to happen today? Or will it be pushed tomorrow?

I have seen other extensions like BIZ/US drop a day early or late before, but I have never seen an issue with COM/NET not dropping. It is very odd.

It seems that some .us domains dropped today as scheduled.

Like bmugford, I have seen .us domains drop at odd times, sometimes a day early. If I really want a domain (but not enough to backorder), I start checking early.

There was an issue with Verisign domains (.com / .net) not dropping on June 17th this year. Those, if I recall correctly, dropped about four hours late. So, this is the worst instance I've seen since I started domaining.

Typically, .com and .net domains will drop between 11am US Pacific time and 1:15pm.

Other gTLDs are not affected because they're handled by different companies. .ORGs are handled by PIR, which is operated by Afilias. Afilias also handles .INFO domains. .BIZ and .US are handled by Neustar.

The implication of all this is that something is amiss at Verisign.

Cycles are about to change I believe.

I had 18 .com and .net backorders today, none dropped.. Same started to happen with the .US extension a little more than a week ago and is still happening till today.

So for now, .COM .NET and .US ... Also .INFO and .ORG have the same problem. Snapnames concluded that they've officially failed to catch the domains which means, they wont even attempt tomorrow! I believe Pool NJ, and IN will keep trying.

But I also believe, the cycles are about to change... no dropping list out there is not 100% accurate that you can count on.

I like it better this way.

Some registrars will hold the "pending delete" domain names and put them to their own auction platform, especially if someone backorder the domains or if the domains are good enough (by the registrars' standards).
Some registrars even have branch companies that will take over the "suppose to drop" domains.
Therefore, there are many good domains that will never drop.

i've been waiting for a .com to drop for weeks now - it expired in July, how long do these creatures normally take to drop from expiry?

Untrue to my knowledge.

Verisign makes their money off early redemption, but not 45 days after. They just release it publicly.

That's not possible. Verisign renews all expired com's for 45 days for free. During that time the registrar can either pay the money or auto renewal will be reverted back. The domains are not under the control of the registrar when they reach pending delete which is about 85 days after expiry.

The only way for the registrars to keep the domains would be to pay the renewal fee themselves, but then the domain wouldn't reach pending delete either because it would be renewed. Tucows is known for renewing good customer domains and keeping to themselves. But this is only a small percentage of the expired tucows domains.
