Interesting!
Many domains will drop and probably wont be snapped by the usual suspects.

Some registrars will hold the "pending delete" domain names and put them to their own auction platform

Nope. Once a domain moves from "expired" to "pending delete", they're going into the public pool. It's only a matter of when.

A registrar can, in theory, hold onto a domain as long as they want to pay for it. But, once the registrar has told Verisign they are giving up sponsorship of the domain for sure, it must be deleted at some point.

I had the idea that would happen and was preparing for that :)

@DNabc:
Do you mean you knew that this would possibly
happen yesterday or that you just generally
prepare for delays like that?

If you care to share - I'm just curious B-)

THX & Greetings,
Georg

No, I just thought that they would drop today at that time... and was prepared for it :)

Cool, thanks DNabc - I'm waiting to see
the big domain news sites post something
about this as well.

Why does this thread remind me of the Chicken Little story about him screaming "the sky is falling"? Drops stopping would change domaining for a lot of people.

Now that would be fun to watch.

They will have to drop any day, even after x auctions. If not Verisign and Icann will loose a few dollars :)

Didn't noticed any substantial change in today's registrations concerning the usual services and companies that get some of the best.

I hadn't backordered a domain in a couple of years and guess what, I backordered a domain at SnapNames for a domain dropping on the 3rd. When I read that SnapNames weren't going to try capturing those domains which had supposed to drop, I didn't know what to do. But I wake up this morning (asia time) and find they captured it. So I'm a happy chap :)

Untrue to my knowledge.

Verisign makes their money off early redemption, but not 45 days after. They just release it publicly.

When I said registrars, I mean domain registration service companies like Moniker, eNom, GoDaddy or Dynadot, but not Verisign.

That's not possible. Verisign renews all expired com's for 45 days for free. During that time the registrar can either pay the money or auto renewal will be reverted back. The domains are not under the control of the registrar when they reach pending delete which is about 85 days after expiry.

The only way for the registrars to keep the domains would be to pay the renewal fee themselves, but then the domain wouldn't reach pending delete either because it would be renewed. Tucows is known for renewing good customer domains and keeping to themselves. But this is only a small percentage of the expired tucows domains.

I was speaking from my own personal experiences.
I have seen some domains put on auctions by Dynadot when they were in redemption periods.
And I have backordered a couple of domains at GoDaddy when their statuses were shown as "pending delete" but they were then put on GoDaddy's aftermarket for auctions. I remember one of those domains' old registrars was Tucows.
I later came across an article saying that GoDaddy has established a business deal/relationship with Tucows that allows GoDaddy to "catch" Tucows' domains before they are actually dropped.
I suppose if some Tucows' expiring domains are backordered at GoDaddy, GD will renew them before they drop, and then put them on auction.

These domains have not passed the 45 day free auto renewal. They are not pending delete. The Dynadot domains you are talking about are also listed on my website. These domains expired less than 45 days ago. They are renewed by the registry (verisign) for 45 days for free. They are still under the control of the registrar (Dynadot).

However pending delete domains are not under the control of registrars.

No. Those domains are not pending delete. No registrar has any control of any pending delete domain. They are controlled by the registry which sells the domains to registrars. The domains they are talking in the article are not pending delete. Moreover now tucows made a deal with namejet. But these are not pending delete. Details are here:
http://tucowsinc.com/news/2009/02/tucows-expired-domain-names-now-at-namejet/

On this page I wrote a long description about what pending delete and pre release means:
