Why does my site keep disappearing from Google??

Hi all....

I have noticed that my site keeps disappearing from 1st page on Google search......i then change title around...and site is back in the #4 spot where it's been for the last year........every time it disappears...i just tweak the title...and voila....it's back!....it stays there for about 2-3 weeks...and then i need to do this all over again.....

why does this keep happening?....and how do i put an end to this?

thanks
tony

send a letter to google telling them to stop updating their algorithm. also send letters to all your competitors telling them to stop making changes to their sites.

next time it happens go through the first 10 pages or so and see if it is listed anywhere. There are a few penalties that drop you x amount of places.

When you change the title it might be thinking it is a changed page then finds it is not so penalizes again.

Shockie is actually though telling you the reason why it happens.

The thing is that rankings are constantly evaluated and this means that your site could drop a few spots and then come back again.

Changing your page title whenever you see your rankings in the search results drop isn't going to do you good either, it only contributes even more for your site to drop and turn back up...or perhaps not at all.

Evaluate your own traffic logs, this change in rankings probably caused a overall traffic drop, find out which keywords worked best for you in terms fo traffic and put that back in.

And then stop messing with it, like Shockie said you are competing with others and they might just have more link mass coming their way, more backlinks.

No matter how original your content may be, without backlinks it doesn't mean anything to Google, other sites with similar content but with more backlinks will outrank you all the time then.

Especially on competitive terms.

Keep your eye on the Buy Viagra SERP's - then you'll see how websites drop and come back, disappear. ;)

That's just the force of the Google ;)

Things to do:

1: Make your mind up on your page title.
2: Continuously work on your backlink strategy.

Good luck!

i have done that....no where in the first 20 pages for the keyword.....site is just totally gone......then i change title around...and it's back the next day or so.....until it disappears again after a few weeks....

wtf???

If you ignore it and make no changes whatsoever it will probably continue to do the same thing. I think it has at least something to do with which data center your query happens to hit.

I think what is happening is that, google wants to see your site updated, which you do in a way, that you change your title. Google thinks that the content is updated, and google then gives you a new content boost.

Google give a New Content Boost to new pages and new sites, this boost helps them rank high in search results. But this boost is only temporary.

I suggest you get some relevant backlinks and add content in your site on regular bases.

This will help to get a stable position in SERPs.

Google doesn't have a "new content boost".

It's really simple, just don't mess around with your page title and gain more backlinks from sites with relevant content.

Adding new content on a regular basis also doesn't guarantee a stable SERP position as well.

It looks to me you would simply have to work harder on your backlink strategy, try to gain a backlink from pages your competitors above you have as well.

Links mass is key in outranking your competitors, meaning really great backlinks from authoritative pages, not a ton of directories or blogspot blogs ;)

Another thing that may interest you about your sites position, since it's right there at #6 for me searching via a U.S. data center.

I would also nofollow the links to the pages:

/about
/contact-us
/submit-your-recipe
/press

Nofollow:

Feedburner URL.
Links in your footer to the non-recipe websites.
Bookmark icons.

Noindex/Follow your archives with:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow">

Obtain more backlinks to your inner pages.

And use a jump script of some sort to mask your affiliate links and nofollow them as well.

Your leaking quite a bit of link juice to all kinds of unnecessary pages/sites which you can fix and will make your home page stronger, and prone to rank better.

Here are some plugins you could use for your WP setup to make the nofollowing, etc possible and there is also a plugin you can use for your Amazon stuff.

2 cents.

Sorry Tony but that was funny. But shockie is right - it's a constant flux and you are very lucky to stay on top forever. I call it the google jig and it's just a reminder that the competition never sleeps!

Roy....i've been watching the other top 5 sites....they are always the same ones there...and there is no activity more on their part than there is on my part...if anything...i seem to have more frequent content than they do....

Best advice is to select one final title and stuff for your site......

Get loads of backlinks and even if it disappears temporarily from the 1st page. Keep getting backlinks.

Other then that a site owner cannot do anything for it.

Damion, on my site i have 200 links, most to adverts. If I put the tag
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow"> in front of each link does it mean that i will get better SERPs or at least be penalized less for having too many links? Also, I thought WP blogs were automatically nofollow?

Comment links are nofollow, links in posts and pages are follow.
Having mostly affiliate links doesn't do you any good for sure.

You would definitely have to hide those.

There are quite a few different ways to do this so you would have to explore the above results what works for you.

Damion - thank you. My site is an adult site mainly made up of affiliate links. I will take a look at how to hide them.

If I want to hide links in posts then do i just put <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow"> in front of each link? Do I have to close it out after the link with </meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow">?
