I see several people buying domains for 1-2 $ with 1-2 months registration left("garbage domains").
Can anyone tell me what is being done with those "garbage"domains?

Anything I should be carefull about when selling these"garbage" domains. I have been selling them, paid immediately and buyer feels thrustworthy, but am wondering whether these buyers see things in my(and other domainers) domains which I do not see or whether they use them for spamming/emailservices or whether that could affect me somehow being the previous domainowner.

You know what they say -- one man's trash can be another one's gold.

My guess would be one of:
* The buyer has a very specific end-user they believe would be interested in that domain.
* The buyer is deeply familiar with that domain's genre, and has the will + means to develop a nice, SEO-optimized website behind it as a traffic magnet.
* The buyer has spoken with BuyDomains.com about that name, and BuyDomains agreed to pay that buyer much more than $1-2 (say, $5-$6) to take the name off his/her hands.
* The buyer is extremely naive.

If the buyer is somebody here on NP with an established trader rating, I'd sell with little hesitation. If he/she is anyone else whose background you can't easily verify, I'd probe a little.

I tend to buy "garbage domains" if they sound nice and I feel that I can develop a good site out of it. It means the domain is aged, which is good. Domains with a year to the expiration date tend to go for higher prices, so it doesn't really make a difference to me in terms of price.

I've picked-up some garbage names for $1-2 and then decided to renew the name after I saw the level and traffic and revenue. $.80 a month in PPC or parking revenue for 12 months is all you need to pay for the annual renewal.

I often buy garbage domains, so thought I would throw in an answer. I buy the domains to build link strength for my domain portfolio. Although it may only be for a month or two, adding links to my good sites from the 'garbage' domains helps me gain position in the search engines for my good domains.
I personally don't resell the garbage domains. When they come up for renewal, I just let them expire.

I picked up a domain for $5 here on NamePros .. I renew it, optimized it, then sold it later on another forum for $60

Another story, I sold .org domain here on NamePros for $15 ... 3 months later the buyer posted in the "Sales Report Thread" that he sold it for $250 to end-user.

You call them garbage domains yet you bought them in the first place! See what I am getting at? Everyone see's and values domains differently, you only have to look at some of the comments in the appraisals section!
Like others have said, they can be used to build links or optimised to monetize residual traffic.

May be to increase the number of domains in the portfolio to make it heavy!!

I don't know the answer, but I have a strong suspicion the guys who are buying up tons of soon to expire domains are using them for blackhat seo. Something to do with inbound links from different people, different ip's or whatever.

Someone bought one of mine for like $1 and never changed the whois data when I pushed it to them. I got the renewal and expiration notices for months afterwards.

I regularly keep an eye on such names, I've had some good luck with them too...

I bought a few recently, one for $5 sold for $450, another for $30 with 1 month reg remaining - sold for $702 on sedo a couple of weeks ago. In most cases, the buyer sees potential or has an end-user in mind (as I did with the first 5 to 450 sale). In other cases its for development, long term hold (ie in short domains)... and occasionally its just naivety.

:)

There are no garbage domains.
A number of people selling appraisals try to introduce all kinds of standards in order to motivate their own pricing strategy.
Don't worry: Every domain can be used by somebody for something.
And, if somebody really wants a domain, he/she pays whatever it takes.
As somebody said: What's garbage for one, can be gold for an other.

Hello, I build the sites on domains. For me the older domain the better.
So three years old ending next week is much better that one moth old domain.
I always check the expiry time, but in worst case I would pay finally 10$ more for a domain.
