Why do junk domains suddenly become 'premium'?

Many dropping domains that people here would say are no more than reg-fee, are scooped up for nothing and posted as a premium domain $1500+. Why the sudden value change?

Ask 10 people what premium is in domaining and get eight different answers, with most of them being correct.

On the strict end there those that will say only elite names.

On the loose end any name that has anything going for it (logic, age, pr, net developed, backlinks..).whatever that would make someone think the name worth at least a buck over regfee. How much one then tacks on to the enduser price is up to them.

buyers do not determine whether your name is premium

nor is your domain worth what anyone is willing to pay for it.
( well maybe your domains are, but not mine)


cuz if they are willing to pay $10 and you are asking $1500, are you gonna sell it?

most buyers don't know how to value a domain name and you're gonna let them determine how much it's worth?

When they say: "your domain is just worth what anyone is willing to pay for it" it means when the SALE TRANSACTION HAS BEEN COMPLETED. How much it's worth before any sale is done, is just advertising and posturing between buyer and seller.

If you can't sell your stuff for $1 million dollars, because no buyer wants to pay that amount, you are practically holding an empty bag.

It's just like holding a stock. The price of the stock is determined by the last "sale transaction" when it was traded. If nobody wants to buy your stock, your stock is practically worthless evenif you think it is worth $1 million dollars per share. You can't use stocks to pay your bills. But a buyer can use his money to buy something else.

"Premium"..... "elite"..... these are just English words, that are inherently subjective.

But you can break it down to certain criteria like:

(1) DEMAND - The higher the demand, the higher is the price tag. Which is why humans invented the term "auction".

But what if your domain has NO DEMAND, can you dictate the price tag to your buyer ??? OF COURSE!!! You can price your domain as $1million dollars and never make a domain sale in your lifetime. Which means, your PRICE does not equate to its WORTH.

(2) SELF-GENERATING INCOME - The price tag should not fall below the existing income that your domain is generating (i.e. traffic, whether as a website or backlinks).

But what if your domain has no income, even from parking clicks ?? Can you dictate the price tag to your buyer??? OF COURSE!!! You can price your domain as $1million dollars and never make a domain sale in your lifetime. Which means, your PRICE does not equate to its WORTH.

Not really elite the names Frank Ham Schwartz etc was regging when most of today's domainers was doing something else

Premium just means there is an additional amount tacked on above the registry fee because of some factor.

It's people's interpretation of the factor and the monetary amount that leads to heated debate.

Well, if you are trying to find some domains which were dropped, then pick some .com and check if other tlds are registered, if top tlds are registered by different person, then it has some value as well, but at this point too, you have to make your own research, you have to use your own common sense etc.
