question Why did .CO not do well (as expected)?

I always had this doubt. Being short and cute version of .com, it was only worth for the hype.

Wikipedia page talks about the hype and tech companies flocking to .CO reminds me of .IO

Doesn't this mean .COM is so engraved to the netizen's heart and it is going to be the same forever?

Thoughts?

Development. It became a truckstop TLD where people went before going via a redirect to registrant's .com or .ccTLD website. Development within .CO as a TLD has always been low and at a global level, the market is changing into one of .COM and .ccTLD with very little in between. Even .COM is becoming a legacy TLD in some countries.

@jmcc yes, not many developed sites in .CO is the reason for its fail.

Why did .CO not do well (as expected)?

I've followed .co very closely from the beginning. The reason is because .CO Internet was sold to Neustar, and Juan Diego Calle is no longer running the company. It was under his leadership that .co thrived, and it has not been the same without him.

I think .co is suitable for brand who have strong "co" at their end name.

For example:
Alex & Gibb Co

A) AlexGibb.co
B) AlexGibb.com
C) AlexGibbco.com

My opinion is that a company with this type should own both domain A and B. Main website should be developed in domain A. For domain B, they should be redirected to A.

While domain C, should be avoided.

First things first Dot Co has been an advertiser on my blog for the last couple years, and I do own 2 .co domains. With that said owning 0 and no blog I would still say the following. I don't see .co as a fail,If .co is a failure every new gtld registry should close. It certainly has been a success for the CO Internet as $109 million payday was rather nice. Every extension if compared to .com in relation to usage, development, aftermarket sales will fall short. Someone has an idea related to tickets, they could not get Ticket.com so they paid $20,000 for Ticket.co. None of these extensions will be .com without some cultural phenomenon that comes out of nowhere and surprises everyone. If a company has an 18 year old website on a .com with 500,000 links, why would they stop using that domain ? No matter what the hype, new gtld registries even know that, they talk about kids and the future, Frank Schilling once told me I am not interested in anyone that can read, because he believes it will be the future generations that will foster the new upward swing in new gtlds.

.co's only advantage is that it looks like .com but is one character shorter.

It's disappointing though that renewals for .co cost 2x or 3x what .com costs when .com is king. If .co were to make prices the same as .com then it would be a long-term winner. I see .co as a short-term winner.. long-term loser.

In regards to domain normal pricing.. .com should be the standard. Any extension wishing to compete with .com should set pricing the same as .com or more affordable for higher adaption by the masses.

when overstock got O.co, domainers went buck wild with guesstamations and hope for .co's future

also remember the shiz-zit with .cm

wishful thinking drives registrations, but reality drives the drops

:)

I registered a few .co names during the NC .99 promo.. but I'm gonna let them drop.. don't need 'em.. and definitely don't need to pay $25 bucks to renew them

Well said.

I can summarize these from your thoughts:

1) If a tld has got to be a success, it needs to reach the developers' hands and not domainers.

(Here, .IO wins in the tech niche because there are so many tech websites developed and are ranking well. If you search for a tech keyword in Google, you are most likely to notice at least one .IO. This means tech .IO's value will be stable.)

2) .COM will be the king forever as long as internet lives.

3) All new gtlds are going to fail big time and .COM will boom boom.

Q: Why did .CO not do well (as expected)?
A: Because the expectations were not realistic :)

Nonetheless .co has done better than most other extensions released to the market.

.co is 'the typo extension..' it's what people accidentally type when they're trying to type .com :D:D:D

It works the other way too when you try to use .co

As soon as general availability opened I registered my last name to use as an email address. Unfortunately, all it caused was confusion. Even if I wrote it down on a form, people would correct it for me and add the 'm' that I 'forgot'. I ended up getting my cctld version a couple years later and have since had no issues.

Overall I made $ on my small .co purchases and still have a handful that I don't plan on selling for cheap, but, it isn't an extension that I'd recommend building on.

that's the point.

The ones that succeeded were those category-killers that'd do well no matter the extension (or lemme change that: "would have done well in any extension prior to the gang-rape wave of pointless extensions we have now). The other .co's that sold well came with assets ie websites.

Couldn't agree more.

I made a HUGE mistake and got 4 .co's

Silverware.co
Silvercoins.co
VRHeadsets.co
CordBank.co

I have tried to sell on NP, Sedo, Flippa, AfterNic, eBay, FreeMarket and DNS....

ZERO (0) inquires, and i can't even sell for reg price! haha... .co is a waste of good money

The proof is in the pudding as they say....

Not really. You have a bunch of really bad .co's, thus it's no surprise no one wants them.

I saw a bulk sale on Flippa not long ago. It was for 10 LLL.co's. The entire lot sold for $200/$20 a domain. Conversely, I sold one a month back for $200.

It isn't that ".co sucks." You just have to have something worth owning.
