Why are .org so devalued?

I am wondering why .org domains are so devalued? I can understand for things like shopping, etc, they are not so great, but for information/adsence sites I would imagine that they would be better than .coms. I know that when I am looking for information about something that I generally have more trust in a .org site than the corresponding .com domain.

I have been able to pick up a lot of really great .org names where everything else (including .web) has been taken. As I am more interested in turning them into real sites (rather than speculating) I don't really care, but it does seems strange to me.

I hope everyone survived thanksgiving :hehe:

Good Thought, really .org is devalued but the sites on .org contain more info than their counter parts.

Most of people type in .com rather than .org. But I agree that .org sites have more useful info.

.org domain was originally intended to use by organizations that did not meet the requirements for other TLDs but now anyone can register a .org. .com and .net are the most popular extensions so maybe thats the reason for devaluation of .org.

.org is not that bad extension if you are developing it, but I wouldn't reg any .org domain to resell (unless I find a "great" available one) :imho:

Yeah tru, I don't have a single dot org domain. I feel that if they are on a commercial website, the site in my eyes looks cheap and i immediatly think that they aren't good enough for their name in a dot com. I think orgs should be left to non-profits.

.org is my favorite domain, in fact all of my domains at the moment are .org. But my sites are more towards the interest-oriented/personal ones, not the commercial ones, so I feel they're suited to the .org extension rather than the .com.

It's true that people always think of the .com first, but there are a lot of wonderful sites with the .org extension as well.

Maybe I shouldn't have brought this up - everyone is going to go after my nice orgs :)

surely, it should go for non-profitable organizations and then the value increases.

my personal feeling is that .org is undervalued as a general use domain. It has been pushed out by ccTLDs, but I think it has some potential as a general purpose TLD and see it as above .net and .info in terms of future acceptability by end users.

I believe the .org registry is pathetic. Only allow 10 queries per ip. I will not reg any .orgs now!

What's funny, is that, all the domains in your sig except one are .com domains. :D
