Why so many .nets?

can anyone explain why there are so many asian countries are using .net? i am guessing it is b/c they missed out on the .com, but am wondering if there is more to it than that (e.g. legal issues, marketing advantages, etc.). any info would be greatly appreciated.

I think your original theory is the correct one ie the .net is available, it is a respectable extension, and it is a lot cheaper than paying domainer sharks!

Yes, simply get .net when .com is not available.

Probably they are not aware about the importance of .com name over any other extension, or they think that .net sounds cool. I have seen many websites with .net extension, while their .com is parked (that means, they prefered .net reg over .com and some typosquatter grabbed the .com)
