About the org extension

many people say that org extension was associated with non profit organization so it cannot be used for commercial sites .but now when i see the domain (health.org)in godaddy auction has reached more than 140k and expected more than million before the auction ends..so i want to ask how a nonprofit organization would buy a name for price above million dollar??

i can understnd when a big company would pay an astro number for a name like pizza.com or creditcards.com because they are sure that they will earn more than what they paid because they are commercial sites...but how could a non profit organization pay that astro numbers for what they will never earn any thing of it?



what is your opinion in that
are they really non profitt organizatoins?or what else??
and are there commercial sites use org extension ?

Non-profit doesn't mean poor. Non-profits pay the same bills, pay their executives the same million dollar salaries etc. A domain name is just another asset they buy just like a for-profit business. A good domain name will bring more awareness which in turn may bring more donations and corporate gifts etc.

i didnt say they are poor i know they have many money sources..

if the org only for non profit organization then why all commercial names are taken?like trade..invest..stock...etc..even the two words names are not available...

even the name(make money online.org)and all words related to shop or money are taken

Not all organizations are nonprofit.

Generally .org is for nonprofit organization, but it's not only for nonprofit organization.I even see that some vedio websites use .org domain.The video website is for profit

I agree with most of the answers, there are no set rules the buyer can use the domain in any way they want. The truth though is that a majority of people think of a .org as a non profit. One word premium .orgs are the ones that have the most valuable.

You might hit the jackpot with some 2 word .orgs but those are pretty rare.

Icann is non-profit too, but look at their salaries...
Red Cross is non-profit and so are many others.
Certain types of domains like those health-related fit perfectly in .org.
