Whois Question - Meaning of "Database last updated on"

Good morning.

I did a search and could not find an answer to this, it's a question I think I know the answer to, but I want to know the answer and not just think I know the answer... So I've come to the experts.

When you see "Database last updated on" followed by a date on a whois look up, is that date specific to that particular domain name, or is it a date for the registry in general? Does that date reflect a change to that specific domain name?

What I observed is - "Database last updated on" changes when -
- Domain is renewed
- Domain "status" changes. (there is a status field in the whois). PendingDelete <-> redemptionPeriod etc.

I may be wrong, but these are just my observations...
