A few questions about Whois.

There's a Indian (.co.in) that read...
Created On:13-Dec-2006
Last Updated On:23-Jan-2008
Expiration Date:13-Dec-2008*

* Although the expiration date above is December 13, 2008, the domain was in "Pending Delete" and dropped - I assumed the expiration should have read December 13, 2007 because I've heard the India domain system is a bit wonky.

What does "Last updated" mean? What is it referring to?

I figured out the drop date (75 days from expiration) but the domain didn't drop until 3-4 days later. Is that because the "Last updated" date is after the expiration date? Does that have something to do with when the domain drops?

Also, why is the "last updated" date after the expiration date for the domain?

Thanks!

The last time I checked.... Jan was before Dec by about 11 months :)

I think the Last Updated means the last time somebody did a whois check on the domain, but I am not a 100% sure.

Last Updated means last time the domain properties were changed (contact data or name servers).

Yeah, sorry I forgot to explain that.

Post above is now edited to include...

"Although the expiration date above is December 13, 2008, the domain was in "Pending Delete" and dropped - I assumed the expiration should have read December 13, 2007 because I've heard the India domain system is a bit wonky."

Prolly the name was dropped early for legal/compliance reasons like invalid whois.

Last Updated means last time the domain status/properties were changed (eg. ok -> pending delete).

and the drop date is 'last update date' + 35 days, not expiration date.

Hope that help you.

Justin

Hey Justin

On Inforum, I read this concerning the drop dates of Indian domains...

"After they expire, domains take 75 days to become available.

During the first 61 days the domains' status is: PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE
During the last two weeks, their status is: PENDING DELETE SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE"

So that is wrong and you're saying to ignore the expiration date and just add 35 days to the "Last Updated" date.

Thanks for helping clear this up for me. I really appreciate it.

"Last Updated" or "Updated Date" refers when there is some change in the Status of the domain or the Nameservers ... I wasn't sure if it was for name/address also , so I quickly changed the address in one of my domains and while the address changed in the whois , Last Updated remained the same ...

Yofie refers to "Last update of whois database" as it appears in the Verisign Whois

I think sutuicom referred to .coms ...

in .coms , after expiration ... the first 12 days (though this depends on registrar) is Renewal Grace Period ... the next 30 is Registrar Redemption Period ... the next 30 is Registry Redemption Period ... and the last 5 is Pending Delete Period

therefore after the status changes from "On-Hold" (Registrar Redemption Period) to "Redemption Period" (Registry Redemption Period) it is 35 days till it drops ...

Thanks for helping clear this up for me. I really appreciate it.

Some registrars will auto renew the domains when they expire (like pij.in). If a renewal is not made by the end of the grace period (about 40 days) the domains will enter into a “PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE” state.

I thank that's why you heard the India domain system is a bit wonky.

:hehe:

So ignore the expiration date and just add 35 days to the "Last Updated" date (when the status were changed to "PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE").

Pls check my blog for full review: .IN Domain Life Cycle

Hope that help you, good luck.

Justin

just to make something clear ... I did not know whether sutuicom referred to .coms or not ... I just hypothised that he referred to .coms because I thought , in case the source in inforum was knowledgeable about the subject (61 + 14 days) , then sutuicom probably thought you were referring to .com in the OP ...

regarding .in/.co.in , I don't know the exact dates ... I only have one .in , ternet.in ... and have it on auto-renew so I don't know their after-expiration periods ... I call this type of domains inverted hacks lol

also , the .in registry does not have specific data about after-expiration periods ...

if sutuicom knows from experience then it is probably as he described (basically , the same periods/durations as .coms but with different period names)

That's right, the same periods/durations as .coms.
