Why does making your whois private so expensive?

All they do is make an email account that forwards to yours and put their names in the whois. What's so hard about that?

To me this service seems way overpriced!

It is overpriced, and people pay for it. Some people don't want to get spammed by scammers if they have a nice domain, or they want privacy. Still others think that hackers can "hack through your IP", and want to hide their address and personal information. People pay for it, and the registrars make money. It is a 1-2-3 process.

I think godaddy and RegisterFly actually forward regular mail and legal documents, besides email. I think services that just replace your info and forward email only are a scam

well at godaddy, the cost of a domain with proxy service is currently ~ $9 as compared with ~ $5 without. $4 add-on for this service is not so much.

you could use the namecheap facility which is free but the name reg is $8.88, so the extra cost with GD is about 50 cents in comparison.

While the consumer may see it as "overpricing", the provider sees it as giving
a value-added service. And as marisolblue mentioned, they forward postal
mail as well.

It just depends on what side of the fence you're on. :)

Ya, the registars probably make a killing off of this. Some people probably asked for it awhile back, and so the registars said sure, but its gonna cost you. I guess to some people its worth it, but I won't ever use it, unless its free, like at NameCheap.

I was planning on useing this but the only place i can reg domain names is here and NamePros currently does not support whois gaurd, and it would have cost too much anyway :(. I likke my privacy, but whocares, it is in whois now :|

I have never found a reason to spend the extra cash. I enjoy messing around with apprasial scammers that send me emails. I find it quite hilarious, actually.

Registerfly has it for free now right?

In any case, unless you are in the "adult" market, chances are you won't have too much cause to worry about your whois info unless you're doing something super-shifty. All of the whois guards do contain that caveat that breaking the law or TM issues will still be directed to you, not them ;)

You can always get a PO Box if you want, or use a business address or similar.

It would actually cost money to forward any letters sent to you to the registrant wouldn't it though.

I can tell you that DomainsByProxy (GoDaddys privacy provider) does NOT forward legal documents. They only provide you the contact information of the party trying to get a hold of you. You have 72 hours to respond, otherwise the privacy feature is removed from your domain.

Is it just me or does anyone else see a huge opportunity there?

Oh and does anyone know what is "patent pending" at domains by proxy?

NameCheap offer free whois guard for each domain (new reg) and registerfly offering free whois protection.

PS : I made my own whois guard email @ gmail :D

All the cheap registrars are not making any money on domains but on all the extra services they provide, so I guess thatโ€™s why whois protection services can seem a bit expensive since they just are replacing the whois info.
