Hi all, just wondering how many people here actively pursue domains that are no longer in use by their owners ? ie - no active website and not parked.

How do you approach them - what do you say - do you tend to make the first offer on price - how often do your efforts end up in getting a domain for a great price - also anything else you would like to include about this kind of approach would be appreciated. :)

I saw a thread like this some weeks ago.

The summary was: As soon as you email the owner asking him to sell it's nonused domain (for a great price , for you), as soon as the owner will consider his name like a premium one, asking you for big bucks for it.

I have never tried it, but I am considering in doing it soon. So if you have experiences PM me :p

I have tried several times. I have learned not to offer on a domain in the first email, as this leads to the "ebay" syndrome of an owner thinking a lower quality domain is worth much more than it should be.

This method, in my experience, should be avoided whenever possible. Even when you offer ibn the second round [reply] email, you are often countered with a ridiculously high bid that the owner oftens keep returning the haggling too.

If the domain is worth the hassle, the time spent negotiating and the chance that the sale may fall apart at any time, go for it. If you are just looking for a top notch domain, try and find one that is developed or parked and approach the appropriate way.

[Once in a blue moon, the person is simply holding onto the registration of the domain until it runs out. Then you can take it from them dirt cheap]

I find it's useful to make an enquiry about a name when you want convince someone to pay another years registration fee for a worthless domain :)
