When I'm buying a .com domain (unregistered or previously reg'd), I sometimes have the option of buying the .net, .org, .biz, etc. Unfortunately, I can only afford to buy one or two more extensions most of the time.

In which order would you choose to buy the rest of the extensions if you bought a great .com and you had the money (and the desire) to buy several other extensions? :-/

Mine would be like this...

.com
.net
.biz
.info
.org (depends on the name)
.us
.ws
.ca
.co.uk

I wouldn't consider buying .cc or any others beyond that. Anyone care to comment?

Depends on how "great" it is. If its real good , i'd register the .com , .net and .org instances. Then i register the rest depending on the field. (personal website : ws , business site : biz , information site : .info ..and so on)

id do it in this order

.com
.net
.ca

next 2 are kinda iffy, it would have to be really good name to get all these,

.biz
.info

i wouldnt bother with the rest, but thats just me :)

First snag up the .com and .net then you can work on the whole package. But get the two most important IMO

I think the .com followed by the .net.

Although, if affordability comes into it, I would probably only purchase the .com to start with. I don't think the .net is necessary at the starting stage of a website. If planning resale, then the .net would be good to sell as a package deal :) :imho:

com= numero uno
The others are case by case depending on the site's purpose w/ different exts having different strengths and attributes. Availability is also an issue and is, usually, where it get's a little sticky.
ie
.net- particularly strong w/ internet related goods and services, ie ISP, hosting, network communications.
.org- the obvious. Also works for some commercial applications such as goods or services "clubs", or cooperative businesses such as growers coops, (until .coop becomes viable).
.info- informational sites, (commercial value via affiliate links) and directory portals.
.biz- a viable alternative to .com for commercial enterprises. Particularly appealing to smaller retail and regional businesses and B2B.
.us- United States based enterprise or for non-us based companies wishing to have a US presence, ie AirFrance and Volvo
.de, .co.uk- what I hope to see .us become as a cctld
.tv- one of the more intuitive cctld's w/ good acronym value.
.co.in- a newcomer that appears to have a bright future
...ca, ws ,.cc, .nu, .bz, .cn, .la and other cctld's- good keyword value available, but unproven commercially on the www landscape, at this point.
.name- I like it for commercial potential in a very limited niche- many of my other respected colleagues hate it.
.eu, .xxx, .mobi- new guys ready to step up and worth keeping an eye on
