I like the full spelling, but if you are going to develop it why not make the full word the site name and register the NY domain and park it on the account so both resolve to the same site, more people generally search the full city name than an abbreviation as well.

If I get both names I would need to buy an extra 50 domains since I plan to buy for 50 states.

examples:

and

If doing a few I would grab both, if doing 50 I stick with my previous opinion of buying the full name.

I would definitely purchase both. Mainly because ny is shorter and easier to remember but when someone search they type new york, so buy them both :imho:
