Which file format dose everyone use on graphics.

I have a website which will be heavy on grahpics which would be the best to use, gif format is a little smaller than jpg but png is smaller than gif. I know that new browsers up to IE 4.1 support PNG but there are some browsers that i dont know about such as mozailla "cant remember name of it", also older IE and netscape dont support png. I also know JPG was made for the use of photo images and gif is best for animated images.

Any help on making my mind up on what format to use would be appriciated.

This not always true, sometimes a .gif is samller then a png :) but I would use .gif where you can and use .jpg for photo's. Good luck!

Not really something you can decide ahead of time. The file format really depends on the individual image and what it contains.

If the image has a logo, text, or limited number of colors, try to save it as a .GIF .GIF is excellent at producing "crisp" lines. If you have an images with text using jpg, you will notice an obvious loss of quality near the edges. Images with a limited number of colors will save with a smaller filesize than a .JPG.

.JPG is ideal for photos, or images with many colors, and save smaller than GIF for those types of images. Images that contain blurs or fades will probably be better suited as .jpg.

I keep this all in mind when deciding how to slice up an image up for a website and choose the file format individually for each slice, so the website would have a combination of both .gif and .jpg.

.jpg's should be used for high definition images such as photos, .gif's are used for larger images, such as backgrounds elements etc.

I have saved them in PNG as they seem to be the best size and no picture lost, but is that the way to go since older browsers dont support png.

So next questions, is png viable for a website at the moment because of the browser support issues or any problems i dont know about. Also PNG Vs Gif/Jpg which is best to use, Im not worryed on the size as it stands but more of a compatability with users browsers, but the smaller the better (bandwidth wise).

Edit:
I use Adobe Photoshop CS, if that helps at all.
