Fireworks, exporting image, size

Hi, This may seem like a simple question to most of you lot but its been a while since I have done any work using fireworks and I have forgotting some bits.

My problem is that I have an image which is 16cm in width and 10cm in height (.png format). Now when I export the file as a .gif or .jpeg and reopen the file (the .gif or .jpeg file that is) it is now 21cm in width and 13cm in height!! Why??

What can I do to keep it the same size??

Please I need your help as I have to get this done ASAP and dont be to sore on me please!!

Wow, when ever I use FW I export in pixels and I have never had a problem with getting a different size. I'd have to play around with it.

Na no answer yet. I export in pixels as well and the pixel size never changes but the image still gets bigger?> dont know why!!

I just plaed around with an image and it never changed size on me. Created a new .png as 10 cm x 16 cm and exported as .gif. I opened the gif in PSP and in FW, both still showed it as the same size. Not perfectly 16cm x 10 cm but fractions that rounded up to them. Hell of alot closer than 21 x 13. Are you dealing with bitmaps in your .png? Something that may be overlapping the canvas? That's something I didn't try yet.

Sorry to bother you guys again but i though I had this problem fixed but it turns out I dont. All I was doing was reducing the number of pixels thus the quality of the image was being reduced as well. As I am designing an add for a newspaper this is not good!!

OK, when I start a new image I set the size to, width 6.5 Inches height 4 Inches and the resolution to 300 Pixels/Inches. Then I go on and design my add. when I am finish I print off a copy and sure enough it comes out the exact size 6.5 inches by 4 Inches and perfect quality!! Now I think I am finished so I export the image to a gif and I will open the gif up and print it one more time to be sure. This time it comes out huge, pages upon pages its that big.

What am I doing wrong, Please help am at my wits end!!!!!

What program do you use to open the .gif in after it's exported?

I just reopen it in fireworks or photoshop

One thing I didn't notice before is that you said you changed the pixels/inch from 72 to 300. This is why the .gif is huge.

Thsi happens even if I creat a new image with 300dpi 6.5inches by 4Inces.

You must keep the new image 72 dpi for the "inches" to be correct.
