The reason X bought x.ai is likely just as a measure of securing their brand X, since they own x.com, and they don't want to run risk any other website or service building a platform on x.ai and possibly take over their brand in the future.

Even the guy who bought agent.ai tried to get agent.com from Domain Sherpa but couldn't afford it. .com is first place for AI domains (just as it's first place for everything), .ai is second place.
