I was wondering with thousands of domains being registered everyday and less than 0.1% of that being converted to sites what will be the future of the domain name market.

The point is more people are parking domains but the buyer base is not increasing at the same rate.

Taking a hypothetical number that 100 000 people might actually build sites for Business ( which is way too large number) how are the domains going to sell. As I believe for personal use, people will not want the exact domain name.

Only the very premium names may continue to attract attention.

This year many domain extentions were started, which give buyers more options and that further reduces the value of parked domains.

When I was trying to develop few information sites, I found alternatives to .com which were easily available. Since i dont intend for business use and was for targetted traffic, it was Ok for me to choose .info and .co.in names.

Wanted to know what others think about this.

That's a pretty low number. There are probably a billion or so English speaking/understanding people in the world, and 100k is way to small. At some time, probably almost every adult will have some kind of personal hobby business, and there will be many millions of full-fledge businesses. Often internet savvy people have many domains for their businesses. The advance of blogging for the mainstream will probably hit the domain market at some point as well. People will want a reald domain from which to state their opinions, and more will want personal domains for their own "email account for life".

Only the very premium names may continue to attract attention.

For every name you here about sellling for thousands, there are probably thousands selling for 5-25 times reg fee that just don't make headlines. Domains are no different than any other news. Headlines and attention go to the top 1%, but there is another huge smaller scale market out there.

Most of the new sponsored extensions are for very targeted uses, and I don't see them being much more popular than .museum, .coop, .aero, or .pro that are all several years old. New gTLD's may change that, but I think they will only help the previous round of new extensions (biz/info) seem more mainstream.

I don't think .co.in names are going to become mainsteam except for use in India. .info is growing steadily and is even more accepted in Europe than in the us. Most of the real common useful keywords have been taken for a long time and are both usable for parking, secondary domains, and profitable sales, even if not at the huge demand and prices as .com.

100K figure I quoted was for business. As I said for personal domains ,its unlikely that people will spend that much money to get domain names.

There may be millions of business, but they are not likely to go after domain names. All they would be interested in , is the domain name to match their Shop name. USA and UK being huge markets have almost all business with websites. The non english speaking nations have many more options in domain names as they can pick some combination in their native language.

Bottomline: Rate at which domains are registered is far far higher than the demand for domains or domain buyers.

Bottom line is who cares everyone has their niche and for the most part someone elses opinion is just that their opinion Nothing of any overall meaning. There are millions of small businesses around the world and even If they are not IN an English speaking country they look to do business there. AND I guess I really don't understand your overall jist if you do not like the domian industry get out. Don't think anyone will mind.
