Where does targeted traffic come from?

In order for me to determine how effective buying targeted visitors is, I'd like to know where they come from. I have this idea, that some guy has some expired domains that each have a gazillion popups. Then, they sell those server hits as targeted traffic. Do I have the right idea? If so, I haven't met a person yet who likes popups and this would be a bad form of traffic to purchase.

I'm also looking for marketing traffic for a "specialised" area.

It is hard. The best way to start, from my experience so far, is to CLEARLY define WHAT traffic you want.

I'm asking for Nurses .... and most have an option for "health", but that is to "random" for me.

OdditySoftware (i think) has some slightly better section definitions....might be worth speaking to him / her

Thats a really good question to ask billinchina, I was wondering myself where it all comes from. I have a feeling however that it is mainly directed from parked domains like popups and etc.

My traffic comes from expired domains, its not targeted by category thoe, only region.. UK,US, WW, or Adult.. they dont have popups thoe the just expired domains that get traffic, that traffic is then redirected to which ever traffic campiagn is to recieve it.

But you should be asking this question to who ever you are buying the traffic from as everyone has different sources.

Its hard to get category specific traffic, really hard!! Trust me, except from PPC or similiar advertising on other sites related to yours..

Alot of traffic services do get thier traffic from popups but these arent always good as noone likes popups..

Always find out where the traffic comes from and how its generated.. i.e popups, popunders, ppc, etc..

exactly , you see people selling names and they say lots of traffic and links you then check alexa and see where those links are coming from and alot are parkes names with popups that they link too,
i guess those selling the names think they will catch aleast one stupid person
