Hey all,

Recently I had an offer of $40k for a domain name and to be honest am confused as to whether or not the introduction of dot.anything will change the whole dot.com extension.

If you can point me to any threads on the new ICANN gTLD June 20th launch that would be greatly appreciated.

I want to hear the thoughts of any np users.

Regards,
Mat :tu:

P.S MOD please move this if it is in the wrong thread category.

The silence is your answer.

I suspect most people think this will have little effect on .Com sales.

What they often don't mention in news reports is that there are over 200 extensions in use already. Most are country codes, but there are bigtime TLDs like .Aero, .Museum, .Travel, .Coop --- that go nowhere.

ICANN will find some suckers, some new extensions will see a lot of hype until their money runs out, and .Com will still rule.

It's still very early days. The 20th of June is really only symbolic. The first delegations to live means new gTLDs are unlikely to appear before the end of 2012.

But more importantly

TLDs need a certain critical mass to get mind share. Look at .info .us and .biz they have been available for years and still .com dominates.

It's easy to get people excited about making money, but just because TLDs are there doesn't mean people will automatically want them and start using them. Sure some speculators will pile in but will end users actually start using these new gTLDs?

If ICANN was being sensible they would categorize new gTLDs and encourage them where they are most needed and most likely to be successful (IDNs and some real world communities for example.)

If they follow their current proposals I think they will probably strengthen (further polarize) the TLDs people actually want. Very few businesses are going to risk branding solely in new generic TLDs, therefore many registrations are likely to be additive / defensive for years to come.
