When is it important to buy not only the .com but .net and others at well? It seems like it isn't very important unless it is something applicable like... bigmoney.com and bigmoney.biz or something like geteducated.com and geteducated.info or something like that. Or is there more to it then that? Thanks. I am just getting started and want to know as much as possible.

Hello,
I prefer to buy dot com domains, because people remember more dot com domains, if you are going to create something big, or you are going to create a company, the best way is to register a dot com, is my personal opinion :)

this is sort of what I figured, I was just wondering if there were ever times where its a definite you should also buy the .net, .org, .info, or what have you with it. Thanks!

If I were actually making a company from the domain, I would want all the other major extensions if they were cheap enough. However, unless you're sure the other TLD's have value on their own, it may be a waste as a speculative investment. Odds are, if the name is generic, the other extensions are at least partially taken. If not generic, the buyer of the .com can get them themselves when they buy the .com or if they establish TM. I ONLY go for generic domains in non-.com. I wouldn't waste the money on secondary TLD's for a made up .com name.

Generics are single or combined dictionary words, Made up is , "AQHosting" and ect.

As Mark said, many companies (especially bigger and better known companies) like to own all major extensions, so if you are planning to develop the domain for resale one day, or you have a corporate buyer in mind, it's definitely an advantage to have at least the .com, .org and .net. With generics, however, that's very hard to do, as they are all usually taken. I got lucky several months ago. I bought buyfones.com from a NamePros member (of course it's misspelled, but still a very good name I think), and I found that the .org and .net were available, so I reg'd them. I hope to offer them all as a package to the right buyer.
