I was going through a thread on the forum when for the first time I read about creating a landing page for your domain name. When exactly is it necessary to create a landing page and is there any resource on the forum on how to create one? Thanks.

Just use, DAN, Epik or Efty landers....no need to create them yourself, will save you time and money this way.....

You can then also list your domains on Afternic and Sedo

DNHat creates automatic landing pages for each domain listed on your marketplace. You don't need to create them manually. No programming knowledge required. You can read more about the features here: https://dnhat.com/features.php

A landing page is where you would want a potential buyer to end up if they type in your domain name directly into a browser. So if you choose Dan, Epik, or whatever, that is the platform through which you may get an Offer or Buy It Now (BIN), depending on how you set up your lander.

I have received many offers and made many sales this way. Many of my landers go to my own website, which I created, and allows me to negotiate deals without having to pay the % commission for another company. But I also direct some to Afternic where I have BINs set up for some of my domains. It is nice to wake up in the morning and find one of your domains sold without you having to spend any time negotiating, albeit with a 20% commission ... but if you build that into your acceptable price, it's okay.

What a great question, Reyginus. That's good advice from @NickB too, and there are a few more you could add to that list, but those three from what I've seen are about the best, along with Afternic which charges more but has a wider spread of prospective buyers. There is no charge for listing with any of them but all charge a commission once a sale is made.

But that doesn't answer your question, "Why?", which is more difficult to do in a sentence or two. I'll put it probably a bit too simply, so just ask and I'll try to fill in any gaps.

A potential buyer needs to find your domain name. Unless you have something very special, like a one common word, single syllable, dotcom which appears in many searches all your domain name can do is appear in a list and that only if it is already listed somewhere. Even a very good name, such as caninepet dot com, two easily understood, easily spelt words which pass the radio test, would be difficult to find a buyer for. An equally valuable but not dictionary word such as mikalu dot com, not in the dictionary and more suitable as a brand than as a marketing campaign name would be virtually impossible.

A landing page on such domain names gives each a reasonable possibility of turning up on a web search, thus helping potential buyers to find you.

The second part of your question is more open to interpretation of what's important. Take a look at the lists on Epik, Dan, or any of the others. Find the landing pages of domains on each. Typing a few of the domains into your address bar should take you to their landing pages. By using more than one site you can see what each emphasises. Epik use one approach and the users can vary that within the available parameters. And so with each of the others.

All the time if you want to sell it. If everyone that lands knows it is for sale it has a chance of selling. If a name resolves and getting clicks interest it is already put to work unlike name that does nothing if you make it impossible and hide whois also it will never sell till you make efforts.

Having a landing page is must. People need to know your domain is up for sale. You can set up free landing pages at Dan, Epik or Efty. But I personally like Bitrix24. You can design and customize your landing page to get a neat, professional look. And it's free!

Do you have to create all the landing pages yourself or some sites offer that service without your requesting for it? The latter seems to be what I got from some domainers.

Even if you forward your domain to your auction page it is a lander. Most don't build own but if you control your own traffic instead of giving away your effort to another's site and have your own ads.

You don't have to create landing pages yourself per se but you have to change nameservers at your registrar's. But I for one like to create landing pages myself at Bitrix24, so that's another story. To get an idea, read these instructions for creating landing pages at Dan.

Everything takes time over all you will work out the balance between turnkey solutions and making own. A lot will have to do with niche of domains as some niches offer free / paid content which i promote through my networks.

When you a register a Domain Name at a particular Registrar then automatically your Domain Name is displayed on the Registrar's landing page as available or with a price you have mentioned.

I will suggest you use Dan landing page simply for their good IT interface, better appearance and relatively fast verification. In addition, you can also remove privacy from your Whois so that end-users can see your contact detail and approach you directly in case you have good domain-related from trending and growing sector which they are looking.
