When a Domain Expires, Will Someone Else Buy It?

I registered a domain through a friend. Recently the domain expired and I am unable to get into contact with them. It is currently nearing the end of the redemption period.

My question is whether the domain will enter back into being registerable by anyone or will another company automatically snatch it up? If it matters any, the domain had a Pagerank of 5.

Short answer: if the domain is any good, there is an extremely good chance it will be picked up. If it isn't any good, chances are it will not be picked up. In your situation, the fact the domain is a PR 5 probably will mean it will be picked up.

Almost Any dropping domain with even minimal Value or Traffic will be Picked up by the larger companies and possibly other domainers ....

It may be tested for traffic and dropped again if the traffic isn't too high - So keep an eye out for it at least a week or so around the date you think it will actually drop.

It seems that all names are registered when they expire. Many are just tested for traffic and then released 5 days later. If you cannot renew the domain in time and it is important to you, you should place a backorder for it at places like snapnames and pool.

On a separate note, has anyone made a list of those companies that register and then release names a few days later if there is not enough traffic?

A PR by itself adds some value (it's nice to jumpstart your search engine placement), but real value comes through traffic and revenue.
