Assuming the .com, org and the cctlds are taken, and I would speculate on the future, I imagine meaningful extensions, such as .store and .app for commercial users and .blog and .me (from Montenegro) for non-commercial users are here to stay. As a truly generic extension my bet would be on a short, cheap, neutral and aesthetic one, such as .one. But if you want to make money, I would focus on the commercial users who want a meaningful domain.

In the last few years the ntld market hasn't really made a lot of sense, but I expect that people will slowly discover the more meaningful extensions and start to use them if they remain affordable. Which could lead to more familiarity with those ntlds, a wider adoption and a more lively market.

Morgan Linton spoke about this at the recent thedomainshow.com event in an interview with Braden Pollock. What Morgan said about gg is that just like OMG = Oh My Gawd GG means "Good Game", and the growth of the egaming space has brought a lot of attention to this extension.

Gaming has emerged with websites for gaming streamers, twitch broadcasts, youtube channels, and groups of e-gamers called clans or guilds who build out their websites or redirect .gg domain names to them.

.gg = ccTLD (Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands).

Neither. Many non-U.S. registrants would rather select their country code TLD instead. In case of U.S.-based registrants, since .us is little known, the alternative tld selection imho would be based on whatever their preferred registrar(s) are currently paid to promote. Example: some years ago, godaddy was paid to promote Laos (a Southeast Asian country) cctld .la on their 1st page but the banners were about Los Angeles. So, a number of customers regged .la ...

I think that there have been enough sales in .app, .gg and .ai to justify saying that either of them could enjoy a run like .io or .co is on. Given more time, it'll be interesting to see if recent .vc sales were just outliers or indicators

.WEB would be a brand protection choice for many of those registrants. This is what keeps people renewing domain names in NET/ORG/BIZ/INFO. The number of unique ccTLD domain names (domain names only registered in that ccTLD and no other TLD) rises as a ccTLD becomes more popular. However, .WEB will benefit from a brand protection element. The problem is that most of the .WEB websites will be redirected to the registrant's existing .ccTLD or .COM website.
