The social networking website will be comprised of "groups" similar to Facebook groups. People would be able to follow different groups, and view the updates on all groups on one page. People would also be able to use different usernames on each group. This allows the posters to be anonymous, without keeping the groups "private".

Here is my analysis of some domain names, three of them owned by me:

DarkWay.com

An edgy, cool, domain name. The name is also memorable because it is comprised of two common words. The more common the word the more common it is to memorialize. The name is also short - it's only eleven characters long.

The only drawback is that "dark" has a negative connotation, which is not ideal for a generic social networking site. But this does not apply to some genres websites like adult websites, anti-establishment websites and—as you may have guessed—"cool" websites. :xf.cool:

Shelled.com

This name has a double meaning:

- "Shelled" means having a shell, like "oysters are shelled animals".
- "Shelled" also means having the shell removed, as in "shelled nuts".

This is good analogy for the new social networking site. The site's privacy features act like a protective "shell". Also, people will "come out of their shells" when they have the privacy for this to happen.

But this name also has drawbacks. The word "shelled" is not very common and it may be even obscure. This it may not be as memorable as DarkWay.com and it may be hard to spell out. People may also confuse "Shelled" with "Shilled" or "Silled".

DiscussionGroups.org

It lacks the negative connotation of Darkway.com and the obscureness of Shelled.com, but it may be too long. This is especially true right now since many people have smartphones and long domain names may be difficult to type.

Facks.net

The shortest domain name, but it could be confused with "Facts.net". Also, the "net" extension isn't ideal. People have to remember that they have to type "net" instead of "com" every time, which may take a while to get used to.

If you have any advice, new ideas or general recommendations, please let me know.

Thank you very much.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I'm not a big fan of any of them really, unfortunately. DiscussionGroups.org could be a good name for a message board that allows users to create their own message boards for different topics or a reddit- clone, however .org domain names are often associated with non-profit.

Neither of the others scream "social media" to me in the slightest. Facks.net isn't too bad for a fact website but like you said, the .net kinda kills it.

Maybe someone else here will have a differing opinion though

Facebook.com
LOL :)

To the OP: none of your suggested domains appeals to me even slightly, they all feel totally off the ball. An 'edgy' name is nice, yes, but it has to feel more appropriate. Doesn't have to be 'upbeat', but even something neutral is much better than something that reads darkly/negatively. And even if it is a cool word, you shouldn't have to explain a meaning to someone, they should just 'get it'; I look at 'shelled' and I see no correlation to a social media site whatsoever, and even an explanation won't get me there. It's a cool word for something else, just an entire disconnect from feeling like a social media name.

A made-up name is a possibility, as long as it is very unique, distinct, easy to remember, and resonates with your intended audience. Speaking of which, what is your intended audience? It's too vague to just say 'kind of like Facebook'; shoot for your own thing. What makes it unique, what makes it stand apart, and who are you targeting specifically? Get your niche on, man.

My suggestion: go to the 'domain requests' section here, post even a small budget, describe what you want, and see what domains you are offered. You'll get a lot of garbage names, ha ha, but you might get some interesting ones that you'll either want to buy, or which will ignite your imagination toward an interesting direction. If you can pony up a decent budget for a domain, you might even get some pretty high quality domains offered...

Welcome to Namepros, and good luck :)

Shelled would be the better out of the bunch,

but maybe put some feelers out to see if you can find a better name - maybe post some in the 'Requests' section here at NP to see what others might have for you.

Shelled. But I think Facebook and Twitter have had a bit of a head start.
