The social networking website will be comprised of "groups" similar to Facebook groups. People would be able to follow different groups, and view the updates on all groups on one page. People would also be able to use different usernames on each group. This allows the posters to be anonymous, without keeping the groups "private".
Here is my analysis of some domain names, three of them owned by me:
DarkWay.com
An edgy, cool, domain name. The name is also memorable because it is comprised of two common words. The more common the word the more common it is to memorialize. The name is also short - it's only eleven characters long.
The only drawback is that "dark" has a negative connotation, which is not ideal for a generic social networking site. But this does not apply to some genres websites like adult websites, anti-establishment websites and—as you may have guessed—"cool" websites.
Shelled.com
This name has a double meaning:
- "Shelled" means having a shell, like "oysters are shelled animals".
- "Shelled" also means having the shell removed, as in "shelled nuts".
This is good analogy for the new social networking site. The site's privacy features act like a protective "shell". Also, people will "come out of their shells" when they have the privacy for this to happen.
But this name also has drawbacks. The word "shelled" is not very common and it may be even obscure. This it may not be as memorable as DarkWay.com and it may be hard to spell out. People may also confuse "Shelled" with "Shilled" or "Silled".
DiscussionGroups.org
It lacks the negative connotation of Darkway.com and the obscureness of Shelled.com, but it may be too long. This is especially true right now since many people have smartphones and long domain names may be difficult to type.
Facks.net
The shortest domain name, but it could be confused with "Facts.net". Also, the "net" extension isn't ideal. People have to remember that they have to type "net" instead of "com" every time, which may take a while to get used to.
If you have any advice, new ideas or general recommendations, please let me know.
Thank you very much.
