I have been buying and selling domain names for a while now and I have several websites I was considering selling. I had custom scripts written for a couple of the sites. How do I go about selling the name and the site?

Do I transfer my account from my host with all of the files or do I just pack up the files and transfer them to the buyer? I know how to transfer the domain name but I have no idea how to transfer the websites.

Thanks.

Hey woof, welcome.

To sell a website with a domain, I usually just give details about the domain first, including expiration, registrar, etc. THEN I add details about the site.

For a site with only a little or no traffic, just let the buyers aware of its traffic - and revenue, if you have any, from that site. Exact amounts should be given.

For higher amounts of traffic and ESPECIALLY revenue, post screenshots as proof.

Then, after somebody buys (SOMEBODY will if priced right), make sure you get payment first. Request the domain push information, and then push the domain after you get the payment.

After that, give the buyer the CPanel login info, and anything else he/she is going to need. After that, negotiate hosting - all my sites are under my own reseller account. So in that case, I usually host the sites for a couple months until they can get their own server established and transfer the site. Otherwise I also give them the hosting account login info, the company, etc.

Be sure you detail what versions of installed scripts that you use, like forum software. If it's your own - BE SURE TO MENTION IT. The value goes up a great deal when you write your own script.

Good luck!

Hi Woof,

When it comes to moving websites it can be difficult. If they are scripts you have written yourself then you should be able to do it quite easily.

Not sure if yours are based on a linux server ( I hope so as that is really the best help I can offer ). Just TAR up the entire site ... When the new owners unpack it on their hosting they will have to do a CHOWN and CHGRP so that it fits in with their account, but everything else should be intact ... apart from the paths might have to be changed.

Actually after writing this I see how hard it can be :) Also I have moved several hundred sites across servers when the hosting business I ran moved data centres so know a lot of the pitfalls that await.

To be honest the easiest way would be to offer them free hosting at where it is now for a period, then it will be up to them to move it if they want.

A lot will depend on the script and how integrated it is to the server.

Just PM me if you need any help.

All the best

Richard

i would get the traffic stats, the pr rating. I would also search up any dirt on the domain or website to see if it has any negative feedback or issues with others. In transfering the site, with cpanel i usually would generate a backup and restore it on another server.

if the buyer is ready to accept the hosting plan that you have, leave it as it is and give them the access details.

It they want to change the hosting plans, simply give the files and close your hosing account.
