That's actually a hard one -

The Domain was definitely worth the Money for someone looking to buy something with Existing Traffic and Users , But $386,100.00 is a Good Chunk of R&D as well as promotion money in the right hands. :tu:

Well, I dunno much about asp, but if you want something like that, upload a .php file (to a PHP able server, of course), containing the following lines:

That's pretty much all there is. The WhatIsMyIP success is more on the name choice than on functionality.

Agreed. Also add "Google-like" simplicity/focus on what people wanted in the first place, and a gajillion mentions because of it. Simplicity is a potent ingredient and in a messy world we could use a taste every so often.

I would branch out into different services. Maybe develop some other tools for tracert, finger, etc. Maybe an expired domain section and forum. Think about how much traffic it would get if people had a reason to go back every day.

hmm... i think that is dosen't matter what the name is (well, if the name is sodifosdifnvcue303ba0ef.com then people wouldn't bother to remember it) but the factor is recognition. If people recognise the website as a good website to find their IP address then they will go to it. Also I think that it has the kind of good WOM (word of mouth) that a website should have! eg: everyone can make a website that displays someone's ip address (http://poordoggie.com/home/?d=1&p=quote) but if everyone says to their friends that you gan get your ip address at this website then it will become more popular. It is gimicky too. I first used this website for fun. I used to tell my friends that my ip address was "***.***.**.***" even when I didn't know what it was!

$386k could buy a lot of Internet properties, or develop and promote one that far exceeds WhatIsMyIp.com's current traffic. So anyone want to explain what makes this one worth that price?

Still, I'm very happy for the seller. I bet it exceeded his wildest expectations.

I would not buy that even if I had the extra cash flow. I cant see the traffic being worth 386k . Not to mention that the site will never be anything more then a IP site. sure you could add other ip utilities but thats what its going to be.

His FAQ says the sale is the domain name (although easy to make that page)only and there is no income at all. So all you people with the extra cash flow may I intrest you in investing 368k

I think $386k is about 7-8 times what the domain name is worth. Even then, I can't imagine why the current owner says that the site will not change when it switches hands. He certainly can't promise that, and at a $386k investment, I doubt that's likely to happen. If the buyer could make his money back easily, the owner should have just kept it.

I only hope being an "experienced ebayer" will help him close this sale appropriately. That's a lot of money to shill with and an even bigger amount to get cold feet about.
