I wanted to get S.HOW as not only a single letter but a nice hack/play on words but it was $600+/- per year and I was not going to spend that much for that domain.

I cannot justify spending over normal registration price for any nTLD.

Your analysis is excellent. My strategy is the same. I will not buy hardly any "premium priced" domains. I just find the best domains that are regularly priced. If I see a reasonable priced premium ($30 - $60) then I will consider it if it's a 'perfect' name. But that's it.
