What I've Learnt In Two Months Of Domaining

I've been domaining for a very less time: just 2 months.
But frankly, during this time, I've read and researched a LOT (my 600+ posts on this forum would prove that:)

What I've found in the past two months is that the domaining business is extremely competitive, and changes VERY VERY fast.

Over the past two months I've seen:

1.) CCC.coms sell for a minimum of $150, even with letters like Q and X
2.) CVCV.coms sell for a minimum of $500.
3.) Good LLLL.coms sell for $300+ (and I'm talking Snapnames prices here).
4.) .co.in being hardly regged, and .in being completely exhausted of good one word names.
5.) LLL.coms go for a minimum of $7000
6.) .mobi FULL of speculation, but very few actual sales.
7.) .info rising in value sharply.
8.) .us being one of the hardest TLDs to sell.
9.) That only .coms receive traffic :)
10.) That .in receives no traffic, and .co.in receives a lot. But .in sells a lot, .co.in doesn't sell at all.
11.) Nobody will touch two word .cn names. Very few would even bother with one word .cn names.
12.) That IDNs were interesting, but lost their charm.
13.) That domaining is EXTREMELY addictive :)
14.) That most newbies register names like AOP2.com, DellSoftware.com etc. and think they've hit gold (I did...).
15.) That its impossible to hand reg a single .com with more than 200 OVT
16.) That OVT is dead anyway
17.) Sedo never pays.

But I can frankly say now that in the hands of a good domainer, $10,000 can be doubled in two months time very very easily. Its the fastest way to earn money.

Wow! You're a fast learner :hehe: And domaining is definitely the best way to make a quick buck :tu:

While I agree with most of what you said...

I have some .Mobi's that would certainly disagree with you in terms of traffic they are receiving. (I have one that received 11 clicks in the past 3 days.)

Eek, maybe I should park my 400 .mobis instead of trying to develop them :hehe:

I'm no .mobi hater. Heck, there's one in my signature.
But right now, its only speculation.

And yeah, EstiBot does kick ass.

And Bodis...just parked my first name there...love the interface and the customization...lets see what the clicks bring in

Sedo do pays (at least for me) and Bodis templates are far away from looking attractive... or am I missing some new or hidden features?

sashas, I learnt exactly the same things in my two months of domaining, but wont be able to write down everything like you did in right order ... good read

sashas,

Thats a lot to learn in two months... :gl:

It would be cool if you were to come back to this thread
every couple of months and see if that list still applies as
written and add to it or revise it as suits your situation. :)

Well thought out to say the least. :tu:

Great, I get my first Sedo sale yesterday and now there's lots of talk about non-payers! Lol, ah well - you've learnt a lot about domains, so congrats :)

I have to disagree with the above :D
I get good type-in with European ccTLDs for example. Maybe .net/.org is a different story, it depends on the domain history. A few of my best traffic domains have been .net/.org domains :lala:

Very few ordinary people (non-domainers) go around typing google.net, .org, etc. I would imagine that a large percentage of .net/.org parked domains receiving considerable traffic were indeed developed at some point.

CCtld's are definitely picking up steam... Here in Canada, a good 25% of large companies (like Ford, HP, Toshiba, etc) are not only using, but actively promoting Canada's .ca extension. Too bad I missed the ball on that one :|

Some points:

1. They are working on new templates which should be available in the next few months.

2. There's an argument that says people are more inclined to click on links on web pages that are uncluttered. Relevancy is the key - if there are links to the type of information a visitor is looking for then they'll click links (and that all comes back to how good you are at optimising your keywords).

3. I think the Bodis relevancy is excellent. They have done a lot of work on getting a broad spectrum of advertisers and I'm amazed at just how diverse there advertising pool is. I am getting excellent advertiser links on some of my more obscure names and I'm getting great results with energy-related names (that's something I've had trouble with before, particuarly solar power names).

4. I've been credited the same amount of revenue in 8 days at Bodis that it usually took me 30 days to get at my former parking company, and that's using the plain vanilla templates.

5. I'm earning revenue off .IN names - my last parking company wouldn't even accept Indian and Chinese names.

So far it is looking very, very good.

I was surprised to read this. In instances where I've got both .IN and .CO.IN names, I'm getting traffic off the .IN names. What has been other people's experience? Is .CO.IN winning out?
