What happens if domain drops, no one backorders?

I'm curious to know what happens after a domain drops and no one backorders the domain. Does it immediately come available to anyone to register or is there a waiting period?

Thanks.

Hey Fonz
I have just recently became aware of this a few days ago.
I was searching for some backorders the other day and I would come across some names that were deleting and they were showing a deletion date of 2 or 3 days before the date I was looking---for example---I was looking on the 10th of Mar. and I would see some domains on there that were deleting on Mar. 5 or Mar. 6----so I got thinking that maybe they were still showing on the delete list because noone picked them up---there was one there that I wanted so I went to Godaddy and it was available---I regged it :)
So it appears they become available immediately if noone backorders---I think :)

What happens is that domain name backorders go theory catch a name when it becomes available. The market is changing so that registrars are holding the names and seeing if anyone wants to buy them first, so that they stand to make even more money off the domain and keep the domain at their registrar.

So once no one backorders the domain, it automatically becomes available to all registrars and any potential new person wanting to register it?

In most cases. Sometimes a registrar finds that a domain name can make them a little bit of money off of the names by holding them a few days longer - something registrars have the ability to eh without having to way for the domain.

I think you're missing the point that domain names become available and then entities like Snapnames grab them up, unless a deal has been made between a registrar like Network Solutions and a company like Snapnames.

Hope that makes more sense.

Yes, I do understand that domains expire and then go to backorder, but I am really wondering if a domain does not get backordered, is it automatically able to be registered again. I think people have answered my question that domains are able to be registered if no one backorders them.

I would say they are available to reg straight after they drop.

The fact that domains "drop" means they become readily available.. Just so happens however that drop companies have scripts the register expired domains within milli-seconds of them becoming available...

And for reference, some registrars have always retained valuable domains when they drop.. Im a registrar, a domain in my DB is expiring, some of my customers have backordered it, It drops and oh, as if by magic, I register it.... - practice has been going on for years, its just only now when they are finally admitting the practice..

Now all dropping names are caught by drop registrars and tested for traffic for up to 5 days (grace period). Then most will be cancelled (they are deleted at once without redemption period) and become available again.
So yes, as soon as the name is dropped or 'redropped' it is available for registration immediately.
