Right now, I think it's worth nothing until somebody buys something. Well that's what I told the tax man anyway. :)

My portfolio rocks! The value of the complete portfolio? I have no idea really, I guess it would be how much some one wanted to pay , Million Dollar name? Uh, No, I don't. 3L.com=11 , 4L.com= 212 - all hand reged back in 2006-2007, many bought @ $2.99 Godaddy coupon code. But, after paying 10+ yrs in renewal fees on em, I better hope they sustain! I have faith they will. 73 assorted 2 word .com names dating as far back as 1997 , 17 one word mid range dictionary.orgs

Since i came back recently, I have 37 that i have found domain mining, with age and ect, two word .coms

I would say all in all, My portfolio is "Built, Not Bought" I have never participated in the auction houses, I have bought several names from here @ NamePros though. I kinda take pride in my "Built, Not Bought" names. Worked many-many hours to find those names + TM research + Blacklist and archive research.

I am running my mining script on my server as i write this, so the thrill of the catch is what makes me warm and fuzzy inside, I love it! Always have, Always will.

My wife says i should sell off a bunch of names, I say NO - NO- NO, I wont sell em. LOL , She likes my names too, so that helps. But she also likes $$$$ LOL. I truly believe i would hock something at a pawn shop, before i would sell some of my favorite domain names. I am that attached to them,, besides, they make a dollar now and then, and i give wifey that money. And if i croak before her, she gets the names, Then my son gets em, You should have seen my lawyers face when he did my Will, he was like, wtf are you keeping all these names for, are they worth something? I told him, They are worth something to me, i don't know about anyone else.LOL

Appraised value (realistically) is one thing, liquid value is another.
Many domainers think their portfolios will be worth millions in 10 years and they will retire. But right now their names are worth nothing and there is no reason why this would change.

Well said, Kate.

I have a day job that is my career, Back in 2006 -2007 i considered full time domaining - web development, Although in theory it would have been achieving a dream, working from home, calling my own shots, being an entrepreneur, Today i am very glad i did not make that decision, My career has prospered through these years, I love my career and getting up every day to go to work, No regrets.

I am very proud for those who i have seen achieve their dream of full time domaining,
entrepreneurship, It has been awesome to see many here at NamePros achieve their
dream. It is really fascinating to watch the transition happen to people i consider friends.

I know my portfolio will never be worth millions of dollars, The joy i have gotten from building
my portfolio and websites along with all the most wonderful friends i have made in this industry
is absolutely priceless. There is NO amount of money that can change that fact.

How does one value a portfolio?

1) Multiply the number of domains you have at each price level and sum them - ignoring renewal costs and the fact that in any given year most domainers only sell a very small percentage of their portfolio.

2) Apply some multiple - five to ??? times recent portfolio annual earnings including parking revenue and renewal costs.

3) Only value the .COM domains because the rest when considering renewal costs are probably not worth anything.

4) Assume some future growth factor as domains will be more commonly used as a valuable tool for promoting a business' products and services (even though today most businesses and developers currently do not view them this way - thus the reason for so many reg fee end users domains and low industry portfolio turn).

5) Other

I started pruning, but I kee[ seeing low hanging fruit. Now I've got more names than I had a month ago, and that wasn't the idea. Still, I think my portfolio quality is improving. :)

Lol. Those are some very interesting options you presented. Quite a big gap between #3 and #4 and #4 and #5!

I think my portfolio is average, but I wouldn't say it sucks. Certainly don't have any five figure names, unless I get lucky.

If you wanted to do a less subjective poll, I'd be interested in seeing the average Estibot value (per name) of everyone's portfolio.

What would you add for options, I can still edit it you know :xf.wink:

Edit: I think estibot is a joke :) I am more into how people feel about their portfolio.

I always keep up to 200 domains, don't sell for reseller price very often, few mid $x,xxx sales per year over DNS and I am a little happy potato.

One's perception of his/her own portfolio quality is purely speculative and subjective.
Therefore, it's always wishful thinking. Well, that's me.

Two years ago many CHIP LLLL.coms were considered garbage. Now they are a grand each.

Reg fee domains are worth little when purchased, valuing them is hopeless. The question is how good are your choices, no way to know that now. If you won't take reg fee back for your domains then they are worth more, regardless of other's opinion. Reg fee domains are speculation, value them like lottery tickets.

Well I'd make a more defined range:
  • $100M+
  • $10M to $100M
  • 100K to $1M
... and so forth.

Just don't expect many honest answers. :)

I think I have some gems but only if they're developed - just the names are not much value IMO. I can see an end-user paying a decent price for them but not another domainer.

I also have some that I think can sell without a site, very good resell names & brandable - just need the right buyer to see it.

On the topic of automatic evaluations, I'm surprised by the ones Estibot and other auto-valuators show a high number for, and I think it's funny how some that I think are worth something get a $0 value. I'm also not sure what to make of the fact that so far BB, Sedo, and Namejet have not accepted any names I've submitted, and it just reminds me why I am not a fan of "gatekeepers".

True. But at the end of the day when you received an offer for your domain you should have an idea about how much it worths right? Cause as an owner you are the one who will decide on the final price.

Receiving an offer is a good benchmark for a domain, sure. But at the end of the day, the only thing you can go on is real data, based on real market prices of similar domains. And unless your domains are liquid, you have no way of knowing what price you can get for them now, or in 10 to 100 years from now.

In my case... I have 29 names listed on Brandbucket, which I could realistically value between $10 to $40 each (because there is an established market for these). My other 100 names are a combination of random brandables or EMDs. Yes, I price them in the XXX to XXXX range in the aftermarket, but if I were to sell them in bulk today, would anyone even give me $10 per domain?? I have no guarantee of knowing, and until I do, those domains are more liability than asset. My combined asking price for them would be over $100K, but in reality they're worth next to nothing.

I think real data would achieved by research, not by the prices of similar domains cause each domain is unique.

You need to know about that specific industry and how it is related to the web. Is there an online market for the niche you invested, who are your competitors and this type of research would help you to valuate your domain names IMHO.

if...
your portfolio as a whole or in part, does not make any money from parking or other means of monetizing it on a daily/ monthly/ yearly basis, then it's only worth what you paid to build it, to you.

if, any domain in your portfolio has a concrete offer on the table, then your portfolio is worth that amount, plus what you paid for the rest of them.

on the other hand, how you "feel" inside your mind about your names, their potential for usage, their potential in the future, may be greater than what they would sell for in bulk.

so, using that as a realistic measure, my portfolio is worth a few G's, plus what i paid to build it.

imo.....
