What Do Fortune 500 companies think of .TV?

Don’t you just love big corporations. Thousands of people doing plenty of different jobs, affecting every aspect of our lives, but we seem to think they exist in a bubble and haven’t noticed .TV names.

I took a very good look at the top 20 largest companies in the world and found some interesting info.

The top 20 companies in 2009 were:

1 Royal Dutch Shell
2 Exxon Mobil
3 Wal-Mart Stores
4 BP
5 Chevron
6 Total
7 ConocoPhillips
8 ING Group
9 Sinopec
10 Toyota Motor
11 Japan Post Holdings
12 General Electric
13 China National Petroleum
14 Volkswagen
15 State Grid
16 Dexia Group
17 ENI
18 General Motors
19 Ford Motor
20 Allianz

Of these twenty - how many own the .TV of their name?

Would you be surprised to hear it is sixteen of the companies?

Well, it is - and exactly half (8) of them are paying a premium rate to do so. Indeed, Total (the French oil company) are paying $5000 a year - and they simply point the name (at the moment) to a parking page advertising football scores!!!!

So to all those who think .Tv is a flash in the pan - grow up and look around.

Just for fun I also took a look at the remaining 80 companies in the top 100 largest corporations in the world. Of these, some 68 were gone...

ArcelorMittal.tv
Generali.tv
ATT.tv
AXA.tv
BankofAmerica.tv

And most were actually in the hands of the corporation or in the hands of a partner dealing with one aspect of their business!!!

Tesco.tv as an example is owned by another company, but that company is working on a digital televsion channel for the Tesco shopping stores.

And people sit here saying .TV is dead.

It isn’t - but their old-fashioned ostrich-in-the-ground thinking most certainly is!

Jimbo,

When it comes to .tv facts you definitely do your homework!
I always enjoy reading your latest research.

Very Cool.
Thanks

Great. But how many of those .tv are developed as stand-alone websites ?
Large corporations are used to defensive regs, the ones that you listed probably own the .mobi version of their names too.

I checked a few of these domains, my 'random' sampling must have been poor cause I found many redirects or unreachable site + HTTP/401 forbidden etc.

Another example: francetelecom.tv
This is one perfect end user for the extension. You would expect to find something nice but the domain name is parked. It's been registered since 2001 and if they haven't done anything yet with the domain, one can assume they are not interested in developing that 'asset' and it's going to sit idle for another decade.
francetelecom.tv
Creation Date: 09-nov-2001

Granted, these corporations are .tv-aware. But if the domains are not used it's like they are dead. Feel free to check each domain name one by one and report what you've found :)

Interesting info but how does this bode well for the .tv aftermarket? You are not recommending registering TM .tv domains? I'm pretty sure that's not what your suggesting people do to make $ with this extension. So, are brandable .tv domains a good investment then, is that what you are saying...?

I never have said that .tv is dead, I even own and have flipped generic .tv domains for great roi. I just don't see how this information proves .tv is not a 'flash in the pan'. Lot's of companies will throw a little money at a domain purchase or registration if they think it will ultimately protect their brand in the long run... even they know they can stop renewing the domains if they become a burden.

Great. But how many of those .tv are developed as stand-alone websites ?

One minute you are telling us nobody outside of domainers are buying names and when faced with facts proving that the majority of corporations have been acquiring their .Tv names you then complain they are not all stand-alone websites. WTF!

Granted, these corporations are .tv-aware. But if the domains are not used it's like they are dead.)

IS a domainer really complaining that a corporation has bought a domain name. What would you care what happens to the name once you sold it!

Finally, take a look at BMW.tv or Mercedes-Benz.tv

Perhaps that might show you how these names ARE being used when people think the time is right for their products and services.

Show me a standalone? Honestly, get rid of the 'its not .com so its shit' mentality and see what's happening in the real-world.

You are not recommending registering TM .tv domains?

I most certainly am not! And any insinuation that I was would be very unwelcome.

I purposely left out the the available names to ensure no one was even enticed to buy names that may have TM issues.

This information was simply to prove the fact that real companies buy .tv - not just domainers.

... I know :)

It was more of a setup question for the one that followed...

They haven't even set the name up and that is an example of what they think of .tv?

I think there is a degree of unreality in this thread. We know .tv is used quite a bit in areas relating to television and online video, but the above just looks mainly like defensive registrations. I would suggest running the same thing for .biz and .info aswell, people in those areas used to come out with similar examples a few years ago.

Also who is saying .tv is dead? The market for domainers trading in .tv names is what is dead. As far as usage (in its niche) and the registry goes it is very much alive.

Perhaps you might be...

I'd say the .com market is down about 60% from the peak, but that is nothing like what has been seen in .tv where people are just walking away from names they paid a premium price for. Whilst the domain market has crashed, most parts are at least still in tact. I do not think that could be said about the market today for .tv.

If something is worse than crashed, what is it, if not dead?

And with those words, our gallant Quixote meanders aimlessly, drifting from thread to thread. The sheer audacity that his mortal foes possess to defy his call to denounce their speculative ventures wreaks havoc in his very soul, stirring him to lambast the heathens and mock their efforts with his tales of yore.

The 20th century waits for no one, he realizes, as he sets once again upon his ass and Sancho to venture forth to yet another thread on this most unholy forum dedicated to a God-forsaken extension.

He would almost deem himself touched indeed if it were not for his holiest of quests. The man of La Mancha nevers wavers from his surrealistic mission and he understands that there are many battles yet to be waged.

Carry on, O Brave and confident soldier of righteousness, your ageless and seemingly useless conflicts, although irrelevant, are colorful to the heart and spirit of Don Quixote's creed. It is, in essence, what truly gives you meaning to life itself!

The dawn awaits a new struggle... %%-

The poeticness is cute, and reality can suck some times, especially to those who refuse to accept it, but the safe bet would be with snoops advice over sarcastic wittiness, .... any day!

Until these Fortune 500 companies actively use DOT TV in the TV ads, then any universal benefit from their ownership is unrealized. These brands have the ad budgets and marketing power to get DOT TV in front of a wide, global audience bringing top-down benefit to the extension.

Books on a shelf collect dust. Same with domains that are not utilized.

What is worse, is that some marketing VPs have elected to promote Facebook over their own DOT COM web sites. Yikes.

In actuality it is a satirical translation of his ventures on this forum. Sarcasm doesn't enter into it as I have no intention in my translations to wound him or the spirit he possesses that I admire. He has played his epiphanies of the 20th century like a maestro plays the Met. All due respect.

Bet as safe as you need to hawkeye, this is what speculation is all about. Feel free to follow Quixote's path back to the 20th century. We here promise that we will not attempt to stop you from doing so(unlike our conquistador and his quest).

Have a great day, hawkeye, and thanks for the input.

Speculating is good. But condesending cheerleading on a 'proven stale horse' to those who see it for what it is (an ok pony, but no race horse), calls into question 'who' is heading backwards in time, or is just stuck in 'what if' land. ("starry, starry eyes..") :guilty:

Have a great day, hawkeye.
Always! B-)

Very true, a name in the whois or a url redirect won't help the extension, it is only real usage/promotion that counts.

Good God - finally five or six posts in a row that belong on planet earth. Fantastic!

I dont even think its called tv bashing - I think its called having a senseable conversation about the realities of .tv without hype - just honest analysis.

Its funny to me that people who in .mobi criticized people who were naysayers champion it in other areas.

Hold on hommes, I'm not criticizing anyone for investing in .tv. If you had read the post correctly, and had kept copying and pasting my names, you'd have seen my .tv names too! And I'll renew them too!! I was just chimming in on the continuing cute deriding thru poetry or whatever, seen thru out other threads, on snoops 'realistic' assessment of where things stand in regards to .tv. Didn't go nowhere near knocking the extension, or those who invest in it! Good Grief.

I'd hate to have you as a criminal judge. Pretty quick with the hangmans noose!

No not at all Hawk you and I have always been cool, you purchased Hawkeye.tv. I thought you were taking a shot at Ken who is only trying to be funny and I know that it did not play well when people did it in .mobi. I guess I was just surprised to see you making that comment. My bad.

Good God - finally five or six posts in a row that belong on planet earth. Fantastic!

I dont even think its called tv bashing - I think its called having a senseable conversation about the realities of .tv without hype - just honest analysis.

This board isn't about having a sensible conversation. This board is about making a market for DOT TV domains. Any negative news or commentary about the extension could scare away potential investors who lurk with the possibility of investing in the extension. Several guise it under the education banner, that they need to teach "newbies". The only education is to teach newbies to open their wallet and spend their hard earned money on DOT TV. That is how I felt for years, while lurking on this board.

If domain investing was regulated, similiar to stock investing, then you would see a different tone on this board. Instead, you see alot of unverified information being distributed - large networks, media interest, unconfirmed offers, etc. When someone calls BS, they are attacked as a troll.

If these tactics were used on Wall Street, the SEC would have bring the hammer down.

However, domain investing is akin to investing in penny stocks. Liquidity is low, resulting in alot of of marketplace manipulation by a small number of people.

$75K offer for a Geo DOT TV. Yea, I would need to see some proof on that one before I make any investments based on that piece of information.

If someone did refuse $75K for a geo dot tv or turned down a six figure offer for a two letter geo.TV - then I have one message to those people - you shouldn't give any advice to others because your sense of the marketplace stinks.
