I’m very new to having my own website, I don’t know a lot about what happens behind the screens, servers etc but here are a few questions hope someone can give me some info. This is my website- www.onbikescotland.com

I had a website made which has several video samples (bike touring) but a person in America told me that it took him an hour to download a 11mbs clip, but on my computer and at a local internet cafe it only takes 70 seconds.

He told me i must have a very slow connection + download speed? What does this mean?

I think my site has a 50mb capacity- does the size of a site dictate how fast and how many downloads can be taken from the site simultaneously? Can i find out myself what capacity by website actually has, how much space i have- the actual instructions to do this?

Basically do you think i'm losing business because the capacity of my site is not up to the job, and are all servers the same?

Any info greatly appreciated

it depends on what you mean

by capacity, it probably means hard drive space, which is how big your website can be (50mb worth of data).

you also have bandwidth, which is how much people can use your site (if they download the 11mb video, they have used up 11 mb bandwidth).

the speed at which they download isn't affected by either I don't think.

who are your host, and do they offer you an admin panel or anything?

it all depends on where the server currently is. whos your host? also do you know where the host is based (country wise)

thanks for the info,

is 50mb enough for a website?

bandwidth- 'if they downloaded the 11mb video, they have used up 11mb bandwidth' - but how can i find out how much bandwidth my site has can I change my supplier?

if 20 people were trying to download a dvd sample from my site at the same time would they experience problems? how can i change this?

my host is vibus.net its based in belfast but whem i tried to ring them the number was unobtainable?? I just left it to my friend (a new web designer)

I dont know anything about an admin panel- what is that?

thanks

did you set up the site, do you know what hosting package you're on?

looking at the site i;d say the datacentre/server/s are hosted in ireland. you should maybe think about getting a amercian host so that people don't get bad speeds downloading.

normally i would agree with the above post but the domain has "Scotland" in it so i would presume having the server in Ireland would be better then the US as most ppl on the site are prob from the UK and not the US

well here we get good speeds from US sites and i'm from Australia.
maybe a server in england then? or a better host :P
it could be just the server its on.
also would it matter if it was in th US? you get good speeds everywhere don't you?

the further away you are from the host, the worse your speed will be (or can be, should I say). nowadays, what with the increase of faster broadband, and the availability of it, it doesn't make as much difference.
