Hey everyone,

I’m in the process of planning a new website and have reached the point where I need to estimate the storage requirements. As storage is a critical aspect of web hosting, I want to make sure I get it right from the start.

What factors should be considered when estimating the storage needs for a new website?

From what I understand, several elements play a role in determining the necessary storage capacity. Here are a few factors that come to mind:

  • Website Content: The volume of text, images, videos, and other multimedia files.
  • Database Size: If the website will have a significant amount of data stored in databases.
  • Traffic and Usage: Expected number of visitors and their interaction with the site.
  • Backup Requirements: How much space is needed for regular backups.
  • Future Growth: Anticipating future expansion and additional content.
I’d love to hear your insights and experiences. What else should I be considering? Are there any tools or best practices that could help with accurate storage estimation? Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best, Jonathan Jone

Hi, welcome to np :xf.smile:

I think pretty much all the hosting sites I've looked at have offered the opportunity to upgrade. Why not start with a basic plan (or with what you think you'll need) and then go bigger if required?

Hi

exactly, keep it simple.

as the liberty insurance commercial says "only pay, for what you need"

imo...

Unless you’re doing something out of the ordinary any basic hosting plan at any of the top/regular hosting companies will give you more than enough storage for an average business website.

E.g. your typical Wordpress site with dozens of pages, images, plugins, email accounts, and backups rarely gets above 5gb. Most are more like 1-2.

The only time I’ve ever seen it become an issue is where people a) do crazy stuff like backups that include previous backups, or b) email accounts receiving lots of large attachments that don’t delete messages from server.

But if you give some more details of what you’re doing more specific advice may be available.
