Hi,

If you know any generic domains that you think are wasted in unrelated site, list them here. Two domains come immediately to my mind:

pool.com
fabulous.com

Pool.com could be about pools and fabulous.com could be a shopping, beauty or fashion site. It is a shame both are wasted forever with unrelated projects.

I don't think Pool.com or Fabulous.com are wasted. You would rather have a SHOPPING site that has nothing to do with the word Fabulous, instead of a domain registrar? What's so fabulous about a shopping site? How exactly would that be a better use?

play.com:
It is a shopping site. Again a great waste IMO.

Oh, and here a generic word is wasted as a shopping site? But "fabulous" is perfect for a shopping site? You have some weird opinions...

Wasted domains:
choose.com Parking page
choice.com just a logo?
toy.com parking page
Hot.com
pro.com doesn't resolve
home.com parked
my.com parked
wealth.com
discount.com
cheap.com

Play.com does not say shopping, it says playing. They sell electronics and other things. The site is totally unrelated to playing anything. If you take a domain like play.com and use it for anything except playing something, you are wasting the potential.

When I hear the word "fabulous" I think about beauty. It would suit some TV ads perfectly. This is a high class fashionable domain. It could be a shopping site for clothes. It is wasted. A domain site doesn't need a fancy name. Look at sedo, they are doing just fine. It is the same with pool.com. Another domain would do just as fine. Look at namejet, a totally made up hand registered domain.

There aren't so many top quality generic words in the English language. It is a shame some of them will never be used to their full potential. Fabulous is rather a nice word. I slightly dislike pool.com and fabulous.com for having wasted those domains. It doesn't make them look smart.

The domains you mentioned are not wasted. They are parked. They can be bought and used for something meaningful. Those I mentioned can't. They are tied to those sites and wasted forever.

These are far from wasted. The fact that you dedicated a thread to them says otherwise. It's really about taking a generic domain and creating a profitable business out of it. It's something we all strive to do!

Monster.com, should be a site about monsters. What they eat (children or pets), where they stay, why they hide in closets etc.

I don't know exactly what you'd do with x.com, but in case you are unaware of its history, X.com is one of the two companies that merged to form PayPal. I don't think they'd just let the domain go, in light of that (or ... maybe. I just checked Confinity.com, the other company in that merger, and it's just an error page now.)

Still ... don't know what you'd do with x.com but for long-term tech geeks it will always have a place in web history, and in context of its history its current use seems appropriate.

x.com could be about something mystical or supernatural like UFOs which is a big business in the USA.

Paypal doesn't actually need any domain for their developer network let alone a valuable domain like x.com. They have those development contents mixed up partially under x.com and paypal.com. They should move all under paypal.com.

Keith,
I agree with you on the principle however when you look at the execution I think both pool.com and fabulous.com are wasted. Neither of them needs the wow factor. They don't need and can't impress their users with their names. It is the wrong user profile and wrong industry they are in.

If pool.com was called namepool.com and fabulous.com fabulousdomains.com, neither would lose much. Those domains are too good for what they are using them.

Perhaps pool.com and fabulous.com would have failed if they had lesser names. Maybe Monster.com wouldnt be the biggest job board now if they didnt have a rock star name early on. There a bit of what came first the chicken or the egg in this.

One thing about these "wasted domain names."

These are all names of businesses, not just the domain these companies DO business upon.

If a business used "Pool" to sell swimming pools (or pool tables) it would not be able to tm their name or prevent other companies from infringing upon it, as you can't trademark a generic (or descriptive) term.

BUT, if you use a generic word for something completely different than it's actual meaning and not only can you GET a tm, but it would be what's known as an "arbitrary" mark: one of the strongest and most enforceable types of trademarks.

So using these words as the name of a completely different line of business not only makes them stand out, it protects their business identity.

They sure are wasted. They aren't living up to their full potential.
