Opera might think they do just fine, and not using the product or software, I can't reply on how 'just fine' it is.

However, I think Opera might just be taking advantage of this .mobi revolution and taking a stand against it.. possibly to use the argument as a marketing and advertising tool. Not a bad idea.. actually its brilliant.

opera is one company, there are several monster companies behind .mobi and whether they think its a 'waste of time' or not, it is here and the names are selling.. and not for pennies. There are a lot of open-minded and forward-thinking people (like us) who are willing to take a chance on the new extension.

If the mass of .mobi supporters is correct, and .mobi will be the default extention on mobile web browsing, all the naysayers will be crying themselves to sleep at night for missing the boat. If things turn out differently and .mobi does, in fact melt into the soup of 'other extentions', hey.. we still have great keywords and will almost always get back more than we paid for registration. Its a win- win bigger situation for .mobi supporters

... infact they dont even know .MOBI is!

HOWEVER...

They may not know about the actual domain, but I think that if the MOBILE WEB evolves, it will be important that websites are able to adapt to it. It would be nice to see all sites have their MOBILE sites on the .MOBI domains but it cant happen because not all companies own the .MOBI versions of their domains.

The trouble with using mobiles to access the internet (unless you have a lot of patience) is a real non starter and I'll tell you for why:

People want their phones small.
Most phone keypads are too fiddly to make it workable.

The never ending quest for making our mobile phones smaller has actually affected the success of the WAP enabled mobile phone.

Of course when technology gives us voice activated typing for mobiles (the ability to say what you want typed instead of spending 20 minutes typing out 2 sentences with the shitty keypad with 3 letters per key LMAO) then the industry will rocket.

even if mobi never goes mainstream that doesnt mean that good words wont still be worth a lot. If the extension doesnt take off its not like they will delete everything mobi. The extension will still exist. Almost no one in my family and my friends knows what a .info or .us is and those have been selling pretty well even though they have been out for several years and still arent popular. its a guarantee that the mobile internet will become HUGE in the future, we just dont know if its going to be through mobi or not.

Text messaging

I honestly think the .mobi extension will suit many people. How about all the people, kids, teens, or whoever that are text messaging? Sure, they have desktop pc's at home, and at work. But, that is besides the point. They still send text messages when they have their cellphones. They don't have too. They don't need too. THEY JUST LIKE TI DO IT, becasue they think it is neat. It will be the same with .mobi. They will use it because they like to use it. Of course, this is just my measly opinion.

.COM is holding up well because it is the DADDY of all domain extensions. If you have .COM it is really all you need unless you want to protect your brand.

But it is simply unrealistic to EXPECT all companies to have the exact domain as a .MOBI as they do their .COM. Sadly this renders the .MOBI extension unpredictable.

Haha. Speaking of which...... I registered quadcore.mobi a while ago just in case the technology takes off. I'm really forward thinking because now I have to pray that .MOBI takes off, and then I have to hope that people are interested in Quadcore proccessing. I also got HVD.mobi aswell which could possibly replace dvds. (Holographic versatile disc)

Thankfully my whole portfolio doesn't consist on the technology that may possibly become reality. But I love speculating. So speculating on a future technology that could be a failure on an extension that could also fail is pretty adventurous for me. But the possible rewards are endless..... That's why I'm so into this!

And there was a lot of open-minded people investing in the internet in 1998-1999 as well on sites like valueamerica.com which lost a couple hundred million.

Backed by Federal Express founder Frederick Smith and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, Value America had visions of becoming a key player in the e-commerce market. Those ambitions seemed attainable when the company saw its stock price triple on its first day of trading in April 1999.

So I don't really put much stock into WHO is backing what.

but even .mobi becoming bigger than .com will not help poor names however

a few things that .mobi does have is:

very serious backing
a serious registry dedicated towards its development
an rfp and auction process that guarantees development and high profile auctions for many months to come
